My grandfather passed away peacefully this morning. He would have been 91 next week so he had a good long life. He didn't want much for a service so there won't be a formal funeral, probably just a lunch or something.

I wish I had been closer to him. My mom was such a difficult person and her relationships were really strained with her whole family, which resulted in my brother and I not having very deep relationships with any of those relatives, even though we literally lived next door to each other. It's such a shame and waste. I've gotten quite close with one aunt, especially since my dad died, and it's been really nice. I'm going to take that to heart and make sure my boys have the best relationships they can with the family we still have, even though we live so far away. Things have been a bit strained with my in-laws in recent years but it's been thawing recently and I'm committed to making sure we spend more time with them.

McG - I hope things go well with your grandmother!

I'm so sorry Semily. I know it's hard to not be able to be there for the celebration of his life. It's nice that you're taking this as an opportunity to encourage a better relationship for your children with their grandparents.
    Hugs to you.
