Default Do You Balance Your Checkbook?

I am SO bad at this! I try to buckle down and write everything down but then I just start stuffing receipts in my purse and a week will go by and then I just forget all about it.

I never get overdraft fees so that is not an issue.

But maybe I should be putting extra money into a higher yield savings (like my ING) instead of letting it sit in my checking.

I am interested to know who actually balances their checkbook.

    TIA

    Yes!

I write stuff down in it when I make a purchase or pay a bill, and periodically (weekly or so) check out the online transaction details that have posted to make sure it balances and that I'm not missing anything. I'm not big on filling all the details in the register though. I usually just do the amount, place, and check number, if any.

    Never.

I don't use my checkbook anyway and rarely have it with me. I check my balance online only to make sure there aren't any incorrect charges. I mostly use a visa that accumulates travel rewards for my day-to-day purchases anyway.

Nope, I've tried but I always fail after a few weeks. It's even worse now that I can just whip out my ATM card and do online banking. I hardly ever actually WRITE a check. I keep an eye on my balance and that's about as good as it gets.

I never understood "balancing" a checkbook. Why would you not write down something immediately during the transaction? I never write checks except for paying bills that don't accept online payments, so it's not like I'm rushing in a line at the store. I write the check, fill in the ledger, double check with a calculator, and it's done. My ledger is always up-to-the-second accurate.

Nope. We use Microsoft Money. We don't even use checkbooks.

Nope. I think I write 1 check a year and I don't carry my checkbook around with me. I just check my transactions online periodically.

    I balance my checkbook religously.

We are on a VERY tight budget and I literally need to know down to the penny how much money is in our accounts in order to buy things and pay bills.

Even if we weren't on a tight budget, I would keep a close eye on it.

If we did online banking or didn't get charged for over x amount of debits, then I'd just check it online all the time and keep receipts for things that hadn't processed.

But either way, I'd know exactly how much money we had at all times.

Never have balanced my checkbook. I look at our checking account online daily though so I know what's going on.

I am the biggest checkbook-balancing geek on the planet. One of my favorite days of the month is when the bank statement comes and I balance it against the check register and everything comes out nice and clean. It's great fun.

Why yes, that is a big L on my forehead. Why do you ask?
