So this thread is REALLY OLD but I'm resurrecting it to see if anyone lives in Vegas or has lived in Vegas. My job offer came in today. It is pretty nice. If I had no kids, I would be on a plane tomorrow. It is just that raising kids in 'Sin City' seems like it could be more difficult than other, more tame places (like Iowa - as tame as it gets!!).

Thanks, Kinder. I have a FB close only friend that lives in Vegas with small children and she loves it as well. Her kids are only 1 and 3 so I'm wondering how that will change as they become more aware. She did drive me around a bit while I was there to get a feel for the 'real' Las Vegas. I still saw lots of payday loan places, boobie billboards and slot machines

My college roommate and her family (three kids, ages 8, 6 and 2) have lived in Vegas for about four years. I'm fairly certain they love it, and they don't visit the touristy Vegas with the kids. They are moving back to L.A. soon (she moved there after college and met her husband there), but only because they're traveling there so often for business that it just makes sense.

FWIW, I'd be all over that if I were you. I wouldn't hesitate to move my family to Vegas if the opportunity came up. I'd be so excited to leave the cold, bitter, LONG winters.

A coworker moved there 2 years ago with a 2 and 4 year old. They love it. They never go into the strip area unless they have out of town guests. She says she was surprised at how normal the suburbs are.

I'm flying out the first week of Oct. for a week. They want to see me work, I want to spend time getting a feel for the area. It is a win, win. Becky The extreme heat has me concerned. It got up to like 125 degrees last summer. I can't even imagine that kind of heat. Plus, my entire family is very fair skinned. My ginger babies are going to ROAST in the desert sun. BUT you don't have to shovel sunshine, so that is a huge plus.

Vaslp That is great to hear! I'd be down for moving in a minute if we didn't have kids. I feel like we are taking the kids from a childhood utopia and plunking them down in the very opposite. I can't imagine two more different places to grow up than Iowa and Las Vegas.

Ha. Remember "normal" is a relative term though!

See, the heat doesn't concern me. I know it's so hot, and it's so cliche, but I can handle dry heat. I think I am SO over cold winters that I could handle HOT. Plus, you get cooler winters, but nothing ridiculously cold, and not for half the year. But my kids tan easily and have never had sunburn, so I wouldn't have to worry much about that. I can see how slathering kids in sunscreen for so many more months of the year would be annoying, because that is one thing I hate about summer!

I'm sure if you lived in the suburbs, things would be fine. My friend is in Henderson. I'm all for using potentially uncomfortable situations as learning opportunities and ways to teach my kids about things they shouldn't do!

Going out there for a week is exciting! I'm sure it will help you make your decision. How does your husband feel about it?
