Tired of clocking in and losing out? Want to pursue creative, fulfilling work on your own time and also make a living in the process? My So-Called Freelance Life is a how-to guidebook for women who want to avoid the daily grind and turn their freelance dreams into reality. Michelle Goodman, author of The Anti 9-to-5 Guide and self-proclaimed former “wage slave,” offers tips, advice, how-to’s, and everything else a woman needs to pursue a freelance career.
Confused as to whether you should tell your clients that the odd gurgling sound during a conference call is emanating from the infant sleeping on your shoulder? Goodman answers all of the unusual questions that may arise for women exploring the freelance world. Far more than your normal business guidebook, My So-Called Freelance Life blends candid, humorous anecdotes from a wide variety of freelancers with Goodman’s own personal experiences as a creative worker for hire.
Whether you’re a freelance first-timer or a seasoned creative professional, copyediting queen or web guru, My So-Called Freelance Life is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in freelancing.

Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent So-Called Guide Comment: This an excellent book. Michelle has been to Freelance Hell and back, and she's not afraid to tell it like it is. And she's funny!
One of the best selling points is that, unlike so many of the "I've had a successful career that's made me wildly rich, let me talk down to you about how to do it in three easy steps," Goodman doesn't sugar-coat it, and she DOESN'T talk down to you.
What she does do is break down the freelance business into easily digestible parts that will have you thinking, "Hey, I can do this freelance Sh**!" That's because you can. But it's not a simple one-two-three.
I'll let her explain it. She does a better job than I can.
Customer Rating: Summary: "How to Survive and Thrive as a Creative Professional for Hire" says it all. Comment: I just finished My So-Called Freelance Life and it has been one of the best Freelance books I have read. Michelle is so down to earth in her writing style that it feels more like coffee with a friend than an educational read. She covers most every aspect of the Freelance life with plenty of information on where to get more in depth information on specific things. I strongly suggest anyone who is new to the Freelance world, read this book. Michelle's great advice will help you to start off on the right foot in your work from home career. [...]
Customer Rating: Summary: Practical + Funny = Easy Read Comment: As someone who has just recently embraced the freelancing lifestyle, I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. Out of all the books I've read, I'd probably put this one at the top of my list. The author does a great job of mixing irreverent humor (the best kind) with her years of practical experience.
The book did a great job of covering everything you need to know ranging from a freelancer's tax issues to dealing with frustrating clients to setting up your work environment. I finished the book with a hit list of to-do's that hadn't even crossed my mind.
Another thing that helped this book to stand out was that its advice wasn't confined to one type of freelancing. As someone who freelances in multiple arenas (writing, speaking, etc), I found other books to be frustratingly narrow.
Enjoy!

Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic freelance find! Comment: I've been freelancing for five years, but there are always new things to learn. Goodman presents some great tips for freelancers that are useful as well as entertaining. A "must have" for anyone who freelancers - whether they are fellow writers, or independent contractors in other industries.
Customer Rating: Summary: Just what this newbie needed Comment: After 20+ years in the corporate world, it was time for me to move on. I stumbled upon "My So-Called Freelance Life" while toying with the idea of freelancing, and this book has helped me work toward my goal of becoming a bona fide freelancer! The author (Michelle Goodman) has created a systematic guide to aid those newbie freelancers like myself; she even talks of setting goals--which usually makes me want to scream--and somehow makes the process relevant and doable. While reading this book for a business purpose, I found myself chuckling at many humorous anecdotes--the author has actually made reading about business a pleasure!
