    Well, actually, maybe quitting smoking will end up being a plus -- maybe after the surgery, you'll be able to keep off the cigs; I know you've been having problems with your weight (or, really, lack thereof), and not smoking may help you gain a little!

    As far as the rest of it -- yeah, it sucks, and it's scary, but you'll be okay. You really will.

    Are they doing a scope or an open surgery?

    I had surgery for a hernia in Nov, 2003 and it was open. It wasn't bad so don't worry! The best advice for you is to take a small pillow with you to the hospital. My doctor provided one, but I don't know if that is the norm. But anyway, hold it to your abdomen as you are trying to stand up, or sit down after surgery. It may sound like nothing, but it really helps! Also take your pain meds as prescribed for the first couple of days even if you dont think you need them. Its easier to prevent the pain rather than trying to catch up with it.
