Ugh-- that sucks! Are you just skipping Killarney and staying the whole time in Tralee, then?

kmack- Love those photos of the Cliffs! When we were there everyone was climbing over the walls, as well. I wasn't interested in doing that, but it seemed to be somewhat the norm. We went towards the south end of the Cliffs, along that little dirt trail. There's a sign saying you shouldn't go, but it's perfectly safe and not at all close the edge. Everyone was walking out there, too.

My DH goofing with the sign at the head of the trail:

You can see people out the ledges in this photo:

Funny thing is that in traveling around the country we ran into so many tourists who'd been to the Cliffs prior to those walls going up and they were all lamenting how ugly and unnecessary they were. I guess it's easy enough to climb right over them, so what are those walls really accomplishing?

Oh, I also wanted to recommend this blog I've been reading.

    Expats in Ireland

It's written by two American who moved to Co. Clare a couple years ago. They have a gorgeous little cottage and do all this incredible gardening, but they also travel around Ireland and post photos and videos. It's been fun to see photos of the non-touristy spots they visit and read about life in Ireland. The post about the two years and thousands of Euros they've spent trying to get driver's licenses is pretty priceless. Anyway, just thought others might enjoy.

We're staying in Tralee the whole time but will make a day trip over to Killarney to visit the lakes and the Gap of Dunloe.

Off to check out the Expats in Ireland blog - that's exactly the type of reading I've been looking to add to my Google Reader!

Going out on the cliffs was one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and I'm not a big risk taker.

DH and I are headed to Ireland in a few weeks. DH has a training class in Dublin for a week, and I'll be meeting him there at the end of the week and staying for a few days. I arrive Friday noonish and his training should be over around 2, then we leave Tuesday morning, so we don't have a lot of time.

I'd like to drive to Galway on Saturday morning and return to Dublin Sunday evening, but I'm not sure if that's do-able? How long does it take to drive between Dublin and Galway? Also, I'm worried about things being open on Sunday. Is that a big issue?

scarlett, dublin-galway is a 3-4 hour car ride (unless you travel during rush hour), so i think it's do-able. there will be stuff to do on sunday, but it will be MUCH sleepier than any other day. unless you are planning on shopping though, it should be fine.

Scarlett-- Is there a particular reason you want to go to Galway? If you've already been in Dublin I'm going to highly recommend that you get out of the cities and see something of the country in the little time you have. It's the countryside that's really the beautiful and memorable part of Ireland, IMO. Particularly in the west. Instead of staying in Galway, why don't you spend a couple of days in someplace like Connemara, Kinsale, around the Killarney lakes or somewhere else pretty and scenic?

Also, I would recommend not rushing back to Dublin on Sunday night, but giving yourself a second night at your other destination. For example:

    Friday: Dublin
    Saturday: Drive to Destination 2
    Sunday: Destination 2
Monday: Return to Dublin, night in Dublin
    Tuesday: Depart

In two afternoons in Dublin you can see some of the bigger sights (Trinity College, Kilmainham, Guinness, etc.) and still wander the city a bit and go on a pub crawl. If you're doing the touristy thing, that is. Then you'd still get two days elsewhere as well.

If you want to look at photos of some western Ireland locations for inspiration, there are a bunch of photos in my trip report.

    Good luck!

p.s. This is the site we used to estimate driving times in Ireland. It was pretty accurate for us. http://www.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/
