I know the word luxury should never be in front of the word vinyl when referencing flooring but we are at a loss.
We need to replace our kitchen/mudroom flooring. It is currently an off white ceramic tile with dirt colored grout. I hate it. It hurts my feet to stand on for long periods of time. If the kids drop a plate, it shatters - even the 'shatter resistant' stuff. Because it is white, it always looks filthy. We have at least a handful of cracked tiles. The back door is off of the kitchen so the room gets lots of traffic. I need durable, easy to clean and something that hides dirt fairly well (3 kids, big dog). I prefer something easy on my feet as I spend most of my day standing in the kitchen.
The rest of our main floor is engineered hardwood but I don't want wood in the kitchen or mudroom because the dishwasher or washer could leak and destroy them.
I've read the luxury vinyl tile can be a good solution but I've never seen it installed - just showroom samples. Does anyone have it installed in their house? Is it easy to clean? Is it obvious at first glance that it is vinyl?
Oh, yes, we have it in our basement and love it! We were going to put down laminate, but even using dry core as a subfloor we were really worried about potential water sitting underneath. Plus we have a slight slope in our floors that go to the drains, and that wansnt level enough a substrate to install it. We went the route of trying to do etched stained concrete, but weren't successful in getting the previous floorings adhesive off.
I say that all just to say vinyl was NOT our top choice and we were really critical about using it. We ended up with Congoleum endurance plank mainly because it was the only wood look plank in our budget that had beveled edges and individual narrow strips to install with. DH installed it himself, I think it was a dry set method (whichever one is more difficult). We are down there a lot and wear really hard on the floor with working out, hockey, a dog, kids, etc... and while it does have some light surface mars (you can only see them in certain light/angle) it doesn't show much wear or dirt really. I think we sweep it about every other month?
