    Default Hand, Foot and Mouth...

Starting last week my 2.5 year old was whiny and miserable! We thought it was connected to his diagnosed ear infection! He then developed a nasty cold and has been even more unbearable. Yesterday he woke up from his nap SCREAMING! I called the ped and took him over. She said she thinks he has HFM because there was 1 white sore in his mouth and he has these red spots that look like big bites on his face! Is that normal symptoms...a cold, biting on his hands and bug bite like marks on his face?! I have a 10 week old too--I know HFM is highly contagious and the baby
Has been super fussy--but no marks in him and I don't see anything in his mouth! Ugh!!! I'm most worried about 10 week old! Would he have it by now if he was going to get it! My oldest has been this way since last Tuesday!!

bethnjim Yes, it sounds like it probably is HFM. I would try to make sure to disinfect your DS's hands if you see them near his face and I would probably also keep the baby away from him as much as possible. A 2.5 year old may also be able to understand a germ talk -"It's important to be a big boy and keep away from the baby so that we don't spread germs" sort of thing.

I'd monitor the baby for fever since I think they get a temp with it and watch his hands for spots -they usually look like small red dots with maybe a whiter spot in the center (but not as white as a pimple would be).

YDS and DD were both diagnosed with HFM today! They started out with a high fever (102-ish) then broke out in canker sores on the inside of their lips. It wasn't until today that I noticed tiny little red "flat" blisters in the soles on their feet and also on their palms when the skin was pulled "taught". And let me just say they were SUPER fussy!

Idk the exact timeline but Zach got a fever on Friday and Sat. Blisters in mouth on Sunday and blisters on feet/hands today (though they may have been there yesterday and I hadn't noticed but I doubt it).

Two of my children had HFM about six weeks ago. DD (7 months) had it the worst. Fortunately, we didn't have mouth sores but she had an AWFUL diaper rash and red bumps all over her legs, arms and hands. Both started with a high fever for a day or two, followed by extreme irritability and then the rash. It was about a week.

Our ped said it was very difficult for adults to get, yet I managed to get it. Let me tell you, it's AWFUL and I completely understand why the kids were so irritable. I had a high fever for one day, followed by the feeling of pins and needles in my hands and feet for about 24 hours. I could just watch it come. Wed was the fever. Thurs was the pins. By Friday, it felt like I was walking on blisters. Saturday I had the rash on my hands and feet and couldn't have anything - including water - touch my hands so I wore yellow cleaning gloves around the house. I felt fine (not sick), but I could hardly move. I couldn't make a fist.

It took a week for the rash to go completely away on my hands. I told DH I felt like it was in my head because it hurt to walk but there were no blisters on my feet. Well, I was wrong. After the rash went away, the skin on my hands and feel literally started peeling off like when you have a blister. My hands are fine, but my feet are still disgusing.

It was one of the grossest and most painful things I've ever had. I have complete empathy now!!!!

When my DS1 had it I was pregnant -he had a very mild case and I came down with a fever and canker sores. We're not sure if I had it or not, but I think the turn around time for DS1 was about 5 days. He had been scheduled for surgery and they had us reschedule for 2 months later.

mkredhead -sounds like you had an extreme case! Yuck!

I was feeling crappy last week and had two mouth sores! Wonder if I had a mild case! Ped said that my oldest has a mild case--but combined with a double ear infection, he is so miserable!! I'm hoping this is the tail end and we are all on the upswing!
