If Katie hadn't planned her exit the way in the careful way that she did, Suri would have "chosen" to be with Tom, too. At least she learned from what happened to Nicole. Nicole was blindsided and had her children taken from her.
Isn't Tom the one who let's the kids do whatever they want? Well of course most kids would go with him. He makes no rules, etc. Too sad for everyone involved.
I think that's the Scientology mentality. Other scientologists parent the same way. I believe Leah Remini is a similar "parent" - no rules, letting her kid do whatever she wants, etc.

Yeah, and if I remember correctly, her views are one of the reasons she's not on "The Talk" anymore. I think people didn't like her, I know I don't like her, which is one of the reasons I didn't watch that show.
I was really surprised at the quick settlement in this divorce. But the rumors are that all the publicity was bringing all the "crazy Tom" talk back up again, so they had to settle quickly to get him out of the news. I am happy for Katie that she can be called "Katie" again, and not "Kate!" Also happy she has all religious parenting control as well as nanny control, etc.
Cruise is an old-world movie star, and the furor of headlines about the divorce (a recent example from Gawker: "Tom Cruise Thanks Third Wife for Silence About His Craziness and Love of Dudes with Divorce Settlement") indicates that public confidence has faded in him. He's cagey, not transparent, with embarrassing public missteps like the infamous damning of mental health practitioners to Matt Lauer, or his leaked video lathering the Church of Scientology with praise. Those revealed something unsavory, that makes the prospect shelling out $13.50 to see a giddy popcorn flick like Mission Impossible—Ghost Protocol—by all accounts an excellent movie, raking in more than $693 million worldwide, the fifth-highest-grossing film of last year—somehow less appealing. Even if I still saw it, thinking about supporting the Tom Cruise empire leaves me with an unpleasant feeling, sticky as a movie theater floor. I'm happier buying into the guileless charm of the new crop of leading men like Jason Segel or Paul Rudd.
With or without Scientology, I don't know how any woman could be married to him. He always seemed to be more into being "Tom Cruise" than anything else.
First Mel, then Arnold, now Tom. So who's next?
I see all these moms who can do everything and I think... I should have them do something for me..
Eh, I don't feel sorry for him. He joined a cult and helps perpetuate that cult's seriously unethical and possibly illegal behavior. Honestly, it's amazing that he's still working in movies, considering the bad public opinion of him and the fact that the studio heads aren't too keen on having his Scientology creepers all over their sets. Remember that Viacom terminated Tom's production deal after the whole jumping on Oprah's couch thing, proving that there's a limit to how much of this stuff they will stand for. The bottom line is that if his movies continue to make money, he will continue to work. I don't think anyone really loves Tom Cruise anymore, though, and that's his own fault.
Rosebud, that about sums it up, I think. I might feel sorry for him if he got into a cult and couldn't get out, but to work so actively to push their agenda forward...sorry, not a lot of sympathy for that. And it has to be a very limited number of directors who are willing to deal with him bringing so many Scientologist recruiters to their sets. I think his days in the industry are numbered.
Wonder how long until Scientology has their own movie studio.

Out of curiosity, is Scientology really that pervasive is Hollywood and/or really that influential? Even my couldn't care about celebrities in-laws are talking about this divorce and Scientology (which they learned about through Fox news.) Maybe I am too isolated here in the liberal Bible belt.

I think there are some "key" players who are Scientologists. Key is a relative term, of course. But they are actors I know. One of the voices on the Simpsons is a Scientologist and gave a HUGE donation to the "church." Tom, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Kirstie Alley, Leah Remini are the folks I can think of off the top of my head. Again, "key" is a relative term, but they are/were big names who could probably churn out a movie or two with respectable results. Probably not a block buster, but not a "Glitter" either.
Scientology targets rich, high profile people, so the church purposefully went to LA to pull in as many celebrities as possible. L Ron Hubbard started that in 1955, offering incentives to Scientologists who can get high profile people to join. It was called Project Celebrity. They have a special church there just for celebrities, and if you google you'll see long lists of who has joined. It's not that I think they've taken over Hollywood, but they are so against people who are at all critical or cynical of Scientology and at the same time so aggressive in recruitment, there have to be a lot of people in the business who don't want to work with them.
