Seriously? I wouldn't think twice about throwing DD's Nalgene water "sippy cup" into her back pack. She likes to drink from the regular screw top water bottles or the pull-out top ones but always forgets to shut them so I use the Nalgene ones. They seem more like big kid "sippies", but I would not send one of the older gerber style ones with little farm animals on them or something like that.

I guess maybe it's semantics. Where does the line go from sippy cup to water bottle? If it's a spill proof bottle you drink from then I'm 40 and still use a sippy cup.

Oooh, thanks for researching laura! I just ordered it for DS!

Laura/Looch- I think my friend has that training cup too for her dd, and likes it.

I guess I should just take advantage of the warmer weather and eat a lot of meals outside so they can practice with open cups!

And thanks for making me feel better about the bottles, lol. I know they will not be taking bottles to Kindergarten (and hopefully not sippies either- ha!) but sometimes when I hear how behind they are in that area I feel guilty. I always say if they give me grief over it someday I will just tell them they were just about the toughest babies ever, and there were two of them, so I did what I had to to survive! But in reality, with boys, it will probably be their future wives who will give me grief about it and be worried about letting me babysit my future grandchildren.

DS is 3.5 and we've been without sippies since he was about 2.5. He had some speech delays and at one of his speech pathologist appointments, she mentioned that she'd like to see the sippy cups gone soon (along with his soother!) as he was developing a bit of a lisp. We had a lot going on right about when he was turning 3, so we ended up giving him a regular cup more often to start, then working on potty training, and finally losing the soother. When I think back, it was kind of a difficult time for me too! lol. He also uses http://order.tupperware.ca/pls/htpro...r=P10059981000 this for sports. He does get juice boxes from time to time, but at home he almost always uses these tupperware cups, but we've never had the sippy lids: http://order.tupperware.ca/pls/htpro...r=P10048897000

We started on cups with shot glasses of milk, not much to clean up, and very kid sized!

Ad yes, we're keeping any still useable sippies for DS2.

    I saved the sippies from DD1 for DD2. It's all washable so I wasn't worried about germs/bacteria.

My kids still like to dip things into their drinks. It's so gross, but DH dips his cookies in milk, so the kids think it's ok to dip everything. I've only had a few instances where they've dumped their drinks into their bowl/plates. My fault for not paying attention. They were done and everything got taken away.

I only serve milk at the table. Usually open cups, sometime straw or sippy depending on what's clean. Sippies of water/juice or lemonade can wander the house. (Drinks tend to get left all around - after finding the second or third milk sippy that had been sitting for days I instituted the milk at the table only rule)

Nope, that is definitely NOT a sippy to me. The one I'm referring to that he showed up with at school was just what you said...the baby gerber kind with animals!

Bumping up with a few questions for the moms that have BTDT please!!!!

I bought the training cup we discussed above and my son's been using it successfully, but I am wondering if I should just ditch sippy cups altogether in case it confuses him. For the sippys he has to suck really hard and with the training cup it's a lot easier as the water just falls out.

Another thing is that DS can't really drink from a straw. I wasn't successful in finding a straw cup that worked for him and just kind of stopped trying it. He's 20 months now and can suck from a squeeze pouch for food, so how much should I be worried, if at all?

    Thanks moms!

My DD does not get confused switching, but I did ditch sippy cups entirely around her second birthday. Maybe slightly before. Now we use take and toss straw cups and regular cup at the table. I tried that training cup but I saw no difference in the amount of spilling (or not) so I stopped using it and just switched the small ikea cups. DD did not get straws at first, so I would try again. You could also remove the stopper from the sippy if you want a faster flow as a transition.

DD never used sippy cups but she switches between a straw cup and a training cup with no problems. We started with this trainer straw cup. You can squeeze it to teach your DC how to use it. Chloe only needed it a couple of times before she understood.

looch: I don't think you have anything to worry about- all kids are different. DD only liked straw cups at first, which I thought was strange since she was so young, but she eventually started using sippy cups. I don't think you need to ditch sippy cups if you like them. DD will be 3 in just over a month, and we still use sippy cups at home all the time. She pretty much only gets open cups (and sometimes straws) at school, restaurants or friend's houses.
