This is my sentiment every day while feeding DD. Trying anything new at all with her is sheer joy for me. LOL Yet I can't even be terribly mad at DS because HE is ME when I was a kid...my mother would have described me as picky as well. I hated gravy or sauce (except spaghetti) on my food, veggies only consisted of broccoli, corn or potatoes (maybe an occasional green bean), and don't let my foods touch each other on the plate or there would be hell to pay! HA!
On the other hand, DD clearly is my DH's child. My MIL describes her 2 boys as "eating like thoroughbreds" as children.

I am wondering what to do with DD when kindergarten starts. She is like me in that she does not like to eat when she first wakes up. I have tried everything and she just is not interested in anything but chocolate milk at first (and I have tried small cups of milk so as not to fill her up, still doesn't work). I have never liked eating first thing and we usually have our milk/coffee in the morning then "brunch" at around 9:30 or 10, a big afternoon snack/lunch then dinner. So, when school starts and we have to get her out the door at 8:15 I'm trying to figure out how to get something in her that will get through until she comes home for lunch. I was considering Carnation Instant Breakfast since she does love chocolate milk. I used to drink them after I had surgery and needed more nutrition and she had a few and liked them. I will continue to try to get her to eat food that early, but in a pinch I want her having some nutrition in her. Thoughts?

How about smoothies? Otherwise I would say from now until kindergarten starts, stop letting her eat between her new breakfast time and the time she'll eat lunch at school. That way hopefully she'll have the idea down before school starts. Our school district actually provides free breakfast for all students in part to tackle this problem. They pick up breakfast on the way to the classroom and then eat during attendance and announcements. It helps catch the kids who don't have breakfast for whatever reason and they find students are much more ready to learn.

I was going to say smoothies too. You can drop some protein powder in, or on the 100 days of real food site she has a recipe for a smoothie that has PB in it. DD is a late eater too. She usually eats her breakfast in the car on the way to daycare. Typically it is 1/2 a homemade waffle (made ahead and frozen) or a slice of homemade banana bread and a smoothie. At home she is a late breakfaster/lingerer, but when we have to go, she eats when she has to. (although technically she doesn't have to bc they serve breakfast at daycare too)
DS1 (almost 4) is a late/lazy morning eater too. He starts the day with a cup of Ovaltine and a nutrigrain cereal bar, then isn't really hungry for a while. On a good morning I can get him to eat a pancake or waffle and some fruit, but he really just wants to snack until lunch. During the school year, there were many mornings that he didn't have anything after his milk/fruit bar, but I was ok with it b/c they ate a snack about an hour after getting to school, then had a packed lunch before he came home. This year he is going to preschool 4 days a week and I don't think his eating habits will be any different until he goes to K, where it will probably be a rude awakening and he will realize he needs to eat more before school starts.
I drank Carnation Instant Breakfast every day from about 6th grade on...I still drink it most mornings now (the sugar free kind) because I am just not a breakfast eater and this tides me over until lunch.
I can try smoothies, but I'm super lazy...especially in the morning, which is why I thought the Carnation Instant Breakfast would be a good fall back. I have had some success with mini-pancake and cream cheese sandwiches or just a slice of whole grain bread with butter eaten on the way to preschool, so i will have to experiment with stuff like that. In preschool she always ate better if I gave her something in the car, but now she will be on the bus and there is no food allowed. I just remembered she loves breakfast burritos so maybe I can get manage scrambled eggs and cheese in a tortilla, that's pretty quick.

You can make breakfast burritos ahead in a large batch and freeze them. Then thaw in the microwave or toaster oven.
That's a good idea.
I was also thinking today that DD just isn't much of an eater, period. She eats enough, and a variety of things (from each group, but is not very adventurous with new stuff) but doesn't often ask for food or tell me she's hungry. She isn't even big on sweets or junk food. I had never really given it a thought until we had my 8 yr old cousin with us at the beach and she was always asking when we were going to eat, if she could have a snack, etc. I starting to get annoyed with it because DD just doesn't do that. I admit there have been times when I've completely forgotten lunch and it's been around 3 when she finally came to me asking when lunch would be. I've told her many times to let me know when she gets hungry, but I think she gets busy playing and forgets too.

I'm going to have to remember the breakfast burrito idea, thanks Laura!
Tracy, my DD & I don't usually like to eat right when we wake up, either. We've got to be in the car around 7:55 to get her to school on time. I wake her up at about 7 and she gets all ready for the day and doesn't sit down until about 7:35 or so at the table. I think it helps that she's got a little time to wake up. You may find that with the changed schedule for K, your DD will adapt her mealtimes within the first few weeks.
I'm surprised her school doesn't have snack time, I thought all schools did that now? The districts around here all have snack around 10 or 10:30. I'm worried about it because this year I have to pack a snack AND a lunch. How am I going to find enough foods for DD to eat?! I like to give her a snack with some protein & fruit, but it's really hard to have variety when there are only a handful of protein sources I can pack for her. And lunch will be peanut butter, so not sure what to do for snack. There's only so many times she'll eat hummus in a row. Trying not to go the prepackaged route.
Unrelated, I have some shocking news to share--this week DD decided she likes roasted seaweed! I am so excited, it seems so out of character for her. I'm about to go buy a box of it at Costco to encourage it. It's so rare I get to add a new food to the list of what she'll eat!
They do have snack time at the Kindergarten, but they provide the snack so it would be hit or miss as to if she will eat it or not. Better to send her off with something decent in her stomach just in case. We left the house at 9am for pre-k, and the bus picks her up at 8:30 for K so I don't think it will be that bad of an adjustment, especially if I can start moving bedtime back as it gets darker earlier. She is up routinely by 8am now, and if we move bedtime back an hour as summer ends she will probably be getting up by 7:00 or 7:30. The main thing will be that we won't have the 15 minute drive in the car for her to stuff in some breakfast.
