Default Vote on new rule proposed

Several people have complained about people posting in colors, different fonts, etc. It makes the board hard to read.

So, would you like a new rule that would prohibit members from using different colors other than black? It would be similar to our no text speak rule, if you see someone doing it, you'd report it and a mod would get in touch with the offender.

It would not apply to a threadmistress trying to get people to notice things in a thread or to mods who are trying not to get lost in the shuffle (warnings, important reminders, etc). It would not allow these two groups to just use it without reason, kwim?

    Anyways, what's the general consensus?

The different colours are a huge pain to read. I hate to put someone on ignore just because they use a different colour, but my goodness it sucks to read on my screen. One of the things I like about cc compared to some other boards is that we have formatting restrictions like small signatures. I haven't complained, but the colour thing is really bugging me!

ETA: I don't care about colours and different fonts in signatures, just posts.

Would this rule apply to signatures, too?

    1. No, it doesn't bother me. Seriously, there aren't many people who post in a different font or color so I don't think it's worth it to make yet another rule for the 2 or 3 people on this board that do. What's next, no avatars or colors/font change in signatures? No wonder so many people don't come here anymore...we have a rule for everything.

    2. I didn't know there was an actual no text speak rule. I thought it was just something that came to be from our board and we're mostly educated women who don't like it, so we don't type that way. Never knew it was actually a written rule.

You might be right that it's not an actual rule, I'd have to double check (it's what one of the mods equaled it to). As for too many rules, this is why we are asking the board at large. We're getting complaints from people, otherwise there wouldn't be a discussion happening.

ETA - this would not apply to signatures - just to posts.

Well there are complaints about lots of things that aren't applied evenly across the board, like similar threads being merged. Lots of new threads have popped up that are duplicates of old ones and they aren't merged like they used to be. Also, it used to be a HUGE no-no to post a parenting thread in chit-chat or outside of a parenting forum (mother's jewelry anyone?) and there are at least 2 on the first page of chit-chat.

ETA: And the text speak isn't a written rule. I just looked them up and it's not mentioned anywhere. It's just how we are on this board. There was a time of too much moderating here and I really think it ran a lot of people off. People were afraid to start threads for fear they would be moved or merged. We are grown ups and outside of attacking one another (which hardly happens anymore, but most of the big personalities are no longer here) I think we should just let things be.

I don't like the colors, but I don't want a rule prohibiting them. In all honesty, I do find them hard to read and I tend to just skip over them, but that's my choice. I don't see any reason why the few posters who do want to post in different colors can't have the option of continuing to do so even if they (now) know that at least some of us don't read their posts because of it.

Well, maybe I'm just easily annoyed, but the use of different colors & fonts in posts bothers me (it doesn't bother me in signatures). Especially the hot pink—I don't know if I just have sensitive eyes or something, but it's really bothersome to try to read a block of big, bright text like that. So mostly, I skip the posts of people who use different colors.

I also don't like that parenting-related threads have crept into the chit-chat section (whereas misplaced threads used to get moved). I have PMed mods about that, but not gotten any response.

I agree with PookiePrincess; to make a hard and fast rule on this is too restrictive for my taste. I empathize with those who find non-conventional fonts and colors annoying, but I think the choice should be left up to the individual poster. I might be of a different opinion if the issue caused the board to slow down for some users, but AFAIK, it does not. A variety of colors and fonts are part of the world wide web as a whole.

ETA: I'm mostly concerned that making this an actual rule would drive a lot of posters away when CC has already seen a major reduction in activity from a few years ago. I think the majority of us are aware that colorful posts may be perceived as annoying, and, as a result, most of us don't post in color. I think this is why the ignore button is useful. If you don't want to ignore a post, but don't want to be subjected to colors, it is possible to cut-and-paste the post in a word processing program where you can modify the post as you please. But that should be the responsibility of the reader, not the poster.
