I'd send a check or maybe a gift certificate to a place like Bed Bath and Beyond.
Instead of having "answers" on a math test, they should just call them "impressions," and if you got a different "impression," so what, can't we all be brothers?
Along the same lines, but for college graduation...My cousin, whom I am very close to, just graduated from college. She is going to be living in Manhattan with friends in the fall and is from a well-to-do family, so she doesn't really need money. I asked my aunt what to give her and she suggested just a nice card, but I feel like I want to do more than that. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe a PB gift card to decorate her new apartment?
PS--I am so sorry if it seems I am hijacking this thread...I thought the previous question had been answered and didn't want to start a new thread.

high school - I think a sweatshirt/t-shirt with her college logo would be nice. I did that for a friend who was transferring for her major, and she LOVED it. You can still do a check/gc if you'd like.
college - we got my sister a diamond pendant when she graduated with her undergrad. Totally "frivilous" but something she has not taken off (she graduated in '03). My parents got me a beautiful pearl necklace for my college graduation. Sure, the cash was useful, but those nice gifts were so ... well, nice. I think I also got my sister a really nice pen set on the day she actually graduated with her masters (and more jewlery later). She has her masters in accounting, so it was useful. She still has it on her desk at work.
I'm a prof and every one of my students always has a giant Starbucks drink during every single class - so a Starbucks card might be good.
Other options:
Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, local pizza place, campus bookstore, local ice cream place, gas card for driving home
Another option would be a big box of 'treats' -- gummi bears, chips, microwave popcorn in different flavours etc... a sure way to become popular on the dorm floor!
