Does anybody remember an American short story from the late 19th or early 20th century about a mining town and this creepy primitive sculpture of a woman? I am 90% sure it was by a female author.
ETA: I have another one. It's a book of short stories. I'm looking for the title of the book. In the book, there are 7 or 10 short stories. One is about a TV show where the viewers control what the characters do.
Another one is entitled "Kindergarten" and is about a man who finds this metal foundation on his property one day. It keeps growing and growing and growing and eventually turns into a building. It gives people the object they desire the most. Some objects have a strange symbol on them. Those are the chosen ones that are allowed to enter the building and learn...starting at "kindergarten".
Another story (the last one, possibly) is about how our brightest and best and smartest human beings can apply to live on a remote alien-inhabited planet. Everyone who goes sends loads of money back to their families, along with happy letters telling them how well they're doing and how much they love living there. One man passes the test and is able to go. He finds out that our brightest and best are not living as well as the letters make it out to be. They're pets for the aliens. He tries to write home the truth, but try as he might, he cannot write anything negative and his letter reads like everyone elses' happy letters.

I don't know...but let's assume it is salt. What story is that? This one is actually for a friend of DH's. After he gave that description to me, I definitely want to read it!
Ribbit--
Thank you! At least I have a name now!
I don't know where I got this book--a library sale or a garage sale in the late 80's. I decided before I sold it in the garage sale to read it. After I read it, I wasn't about ready to sell it! Twice I've looked through all the books in boxes in the attic and I still can't locate it. I know it was a book of stories by various authors.
MichelleRenee--
That last one DOES sound like Ray Bradbury!
OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH! OH MY GOSH!! YES!! That's it!!! Thank you SO much!!! I HAVE seen that book up in the attic while I was looking for something a little more ghoulish with "supernatural" and/or "uncanny" in the title!!
Too bad it's no longer in the library system around here! When it gets warmer, I'll be going through those attic boxes a 3rd time--at least I know the exact title and "groovy-looking" cover! Thanks again!!!

Glad I could help. I knew my fascination with sci-fi would come in handy someday.

Here's one for you then, yby1 - I had this children's/teen novel as a kid about a boy in a future where the world had been destroyed by pollution, and food was very scarce, but he grew a garden and kept chickens in a secret basement under his kitchen. He meets a girl, they get chased by government people, and get these rings that let them into a silo where they'll be frozen until the future when the world has healed itself. By the cover, it looked like it was published in the 70s. Any idea what that might have been? It's been driving me crazy for years!
Now I want to read that book!! That's actually how I find a lot of good books ("City of Ember", "So B. It", "Among The Hidden", etc.)--by looking at what kids at the different schools and classes where I sub are reading.
