    Default Blood in spit up

My son is 9 weeks old. He is generally a happy baby, sleeps well, but spits up like crazy. Large amounts, very often, soaks his clothing, gets it all over himself, me, floor, etc. He's growing well though.

I have recently noticed small amounts of colored stuff in his spit up....brown, green, and red. The red is blood.

His doctor seems to think it is reflux. Did anyone else have a baby with blood in the spit up and have it be reflux?

My DS1 had blood in his stool, not spit up. He had other symptoms which led his doctor to believe that he had a milk allergy. It was confirmed with allergy testing when he was older.

DS2's doctor said today that he doesn't think the blood is being caused by an allergy since he is growing so well (13 pounds right now), but my DS1 was 14 pounds at this age and had an allergy.

Anyway, did anyone have a baby with blood in the spit up?

DS had reddish purplish brownish spit up one time and we didn't know what it was. He did have reflux.

If your baby is breastfed the blood could be from your nipples.

I thought about that...but I do not have any cracks or anything, and I'm pretty sure it would not be likely since I am nursing with a nipple shield.

My boys were both milk/soy protein intolerant for the first year or so, and they gained like CRAZY. DS2 was 28 pounds at 9 months.

It could be an intolerance, not a full-blown allergy but enough to irritate the digestive tract (causing the blood, exacerbating the reflux). If you suspect reflux and have a family history of milk allergy, I would go on a dairy-free diet for two weeks and see if he improves. A high percentage of babies with reflux do respond to an elimination diet with reduced or eliminated symptoms.
