We're shopping now for crib mattresses for our bundles arriving in July.
In a search, all the threads are super old, so I thought I'd pose this question again.
What brand/style would you recommend?
We're looking for a crib to toddler to use a little longer. We looked at the Colgate mattresses today, but they are pretty expensive compared to others I see at BRU and Target. I'm hesitant to just buy them *just because* they're rated the highest and all that stuff-- are they *really* any better?
Are there others that you would recommend? Obviously, safety is the top priority.
Honestly, my son has the $60 Sealy from Toys R Us and it has coils - can't remember the exact name but he LOVES it. It doesn't expel air, it seems super comfy and he's been on it for 3 years know. I personally don't think it's worth it to spend hundreds. Windsorpeak or Baby411 has lots of crib mattress details.
ETA....well, I have to remember that I bought the mattress nearly 4 years ago --- that mattress is now $99 but IIRC I used a coupon. Here it is:
We bought a simmons crib mattress for DS from JCP. I just got the highest coil count as I'd heard that was the way to go. DS has always slept really well on it. I think we spent about $120 on it.

We spent $100 on the colgate classica in 2005 - it was top-rated then by Baby Bargains. If it's safe, it's only because the kid can't possibly fall asleep - the thing was rock-hard. It could double as a coffee table. When DD was 2 months old, I bought a simmons from BRU and now her brother is using it too.

From the price-points that you're mentioning and my research on the 'net, I think we're leaning towards the Colgate 2-in-1 mattress which is basically the Classica hard-as-rock side and then a slightly softer side for an older baby.
The store we bought our furniture from is giving us a discount since we're buying two-- each mattress at $135 each. So, it seems in line with other brands and such.
Seriously, I'm learning there's just SO much to decide that I have no idea about!
We have 3 of the Colgate Classica 2 in 1 mattresses - one for each of my kids. DDs was purchased in 2006 and she now sleeps on the soft side and the twins' were purchased in 2008 and they're still on the hard as a rock side. The firm side certainly feels hard to me, but my DD and now my twins slept/sleep on it just fine (all their sleep occurs in the crib and has since day 1) and I only switched DD1 over to the soft side at 18 months of age. I didn't notice any change in her sleep what-so-ever when I switched it to the soft side. I like the mattresses - they've held up well (DD's still looks brand new after 2.5 years), they're very light so easy to get in and out of the crib for sheet changes and they fit my cribs perfectly. I have nothing to compare them with, however, so couldn't tell you whether they are any better than the cheaper ones. However, I am one of those people who believes that, in general, you get what you pay for.
We have been using the Sealy Natural Rest from Target, the one with ~230? coils. They've been in constant use since 2006 and 2007 (bought another when #2 came along). Seems like it's firm, but not too firm, and I haven't noticed a decrease in firmness over time, so it's held up well. I think that's pretty good, especially since we have 'jump on the mattress on the floor' free time when I change their sheets!
