There are two kinds. One requires that you have the bowl part frozen separately first, which can kind of be a pain if you have limited freezer space, like me. It also takes a while, such as overnight, to freeze solid, so you can't make ice cream on the spur of the moment. The other kind does its own chilling as you go. The first kind is much cheaper. I have the Cuisinart version of the cheaper kind, which is fine, although I wish the paddle was a little sturdier. I'd look for one with a heavier paddle if I had to buy a new one.
