So I would like to get my husband a digital SLR camera for Christmas and I know nothing about them. I have done some research and I think I decided on the Nikon D3100. Does anyone have one or any other recommendations to look into?

Pretty much all the entry level DSLR's are comparable in quality. The average user is going to be using it in Auto w/ the kit lens, so in those cases I recommend going to a store and holding the different models/brands to find which one feels most comfortable to you (or your husband). Brand loyalty is more important when you get into upper level model's and lenses, which is generally the case with professionals. I could give a long explanation, but in the end it probably wouldn't matter. Whatever model/brand you choose will be just fine.

I am going to purchase the Nikon D3000 for my DH for Christmas. I have a question about the lenses though. There are several options but I am debating between VR and non-VR lenses. The difference in cost isn't huge. What's the difference? I also am not sure if I need more than just a 18-55mm lens? Should I also get a 55-200mm? We will be using the camera to photograph our DS and just ordinary novice photos.

VR stands for Vibration Reduction (Nikon), and has to do with motion blur from hand-holding shots with a slow shutter speed. In my case (even though I shoot Canon, our lenses are IS for Image Stabilization...same thing) I would buy with VR, but I shoot in Manual and choose my own shutter speed. In your case, I probably wouldn't spend the extra money on it unless we're talking like a $10 difference. It it's like a $100 difference, I'd pass. I'd start with the kit lens (18-55) and go from there. Unfortunately, the downside to shooting in auto is that the camera doesn't always make the correct decisions...and that's most noticeable when you shoot with zooms (like the 55-200). It's not impossible, but less likely to have sharp photos when shooting with a long zoom on auto, because it's heavier and often the camera will not choose a fast enough shutter speed to keep you from having blur. For average snapshots around the house, I think you'll find the kit lens will suffice. Before spending the money on longer lens, let him use the camera a bit and see if you feel a need for more distance.

Any thoughts on the Canon XSi DSLR? My digital point and shoot just died I can get the XSi w/kit lens through the Canon Loyalty Program for $399.99 plus tax. Thoughts on the camera and the price? I've been leaning towards the Nikon DSLR for a few years, but at this price (and a way to easily recycle my dead camera) - I think I need to go w/Canon.
All input appreciated - thanks!

Robyn- I am still shooting with a Canon Rebel XT, similar predecessor of Xsi I believe (about 5 years old). Like Manteochick mentioned a couple of posts up, all of the entry level cameras are about the same. I would be more concerned with getting a good lens- it makes such a difference. You can take a look at what different lenses can produce by going to Photographyonthe.net.com. I use a Tamron 28-75mm with my old DSLR and the combination is perfect for my needs (kids only photographs). You might also consider a Canon 50mm 1.8, the nifty fifty! No advice on the price, but if you decide to get another lens, see of they can sell you the body only.
Sorry, that's not exactly what you were looking for but I hope it helps you in your research!
