DH has been offered a great job in Louisville, CO and we are seriously considering making the move this summer. We have been in the bay area for the past 2 years, and though we have adjusted and settled in, the cost of living is just crazy. Everything we read about CO living in general seems so positive.
Any suggestions on towns we should research before we visit in July? Looking for a family friendly community, particularly one with a good Catholic school and parish. Would prefer DH to have no more than a 25-30 minute commute.
I haven't lived in Colorado for 3 yr, but just had to say how much I loooove it there! I would move back in a hot second if I had the opportunity. As for communities near Louisville--I can't speak to the Catholic school aspect, just what I've heard are good places to live. Lafayette is nice (I got married there ). We had friends in Erie, and they loved it. If you prefer a larger community, Broomfield is a Denver suburb and is quite nice.
Just a heads-up for commuting--the interstate between Denver and Boulder (US-36) is very busy at rush hour, especially to Denver in the a.m. and to Boulder in the p.m. Although I imagine it's not nearly as bad as the Bay area!
Silvergrey - thanks so much for your advice. Will definitely check out those towns. And thanks for the heads up re traffic from Boulder to Denver. Though we would like to give DH as short a commute as possible, when I go back to work the opportunities for me will be in Denver.
Ack, it is really hard to investigate schools when they are closed for the summer!
Hi kristin - I just saw your post. I haven't been very active on CC in a long time but had to respond to this! I moved out here a few years ago -- right around the time you moved out to CA. I think we were selling our houses at the same time while preparing for cross-country moves.
Anyway, I've been out here for 2 years now and I live about 15 minutes from Louisville. I'm right on the Broomfield/Westminster border, halfway between Denver and Boulder. Louisville is a great town (voted Best Place to Live in America last year, I believe) with a cute little downtown area. There is a small Catholic church and school right in downtown Louisville - St. Louis. We actually go there on holidays because it's small and MUCH less packed with the "Chreasters" than our home parish (Nativity of Our Lord). Nativity is in Broomfield and has a school -- my neighbor has 3 girls at Nativity and she loves it and has been very impressed. The high school (Holy Family) is ranked very high and has a strong reputation. Nativity is a much larger church than St. Louis so it has a lot more members/parishioners. (That can be both good and bad!)
I don't know much about Louisville itself since I've only been there to attend church at St. Louis or to dine in their downtown area, but it's a very easy commute from Boulder (which will be your priciest option), Superior (just across 36 - Superior was also ranked one of the best places to live), Lafayette, Broomfield, and Westminster. If I can answer any specific questions, let me know!
