I am curious about matching appliances. I understand they are not *necessary*, but right now all of our appliances are Whirlpool. We bought the fridge, but everything else was already there; we bought the fridge on accident the same brand, however. Now that everything matches, I am wondering if that is important to home buyers? I think we are going to buy a new range, and I am just wondering if we should stick to Whirlpool for this reason, or if we should get what we like as "the best" in our price range and who cares about the brands? We will match the colors, of course (everything is white). Or maybe this doesn't matter at all? No clue - that's why I'm asking!
It wasn't an issue to me personally as a buyer, to my knowledge. In fact, I didn't even notice they were all the same brand until recently (we've lived in our place about 8 months).
I don't think it really matters. None of our appliances match (brand wise). We just purchased what we liked in our price range. We have s/s fridge, s/s & black range and black dishwasher (the dishwasher came with the house).
When buying all I would care about is that the colours match if we liked them, but if the appliances were old it wouldn't matter b/c we would most likely replace them anyway.
Most of our appliances are Kenmore (Sears), but that's because we normally buy them from there. I don't think it matters as long as they are the same color but brands don't really matter to me. My only preference is that they match (color) and work.
I never really thought about it. We bought our home brand new and the range and dishwasher were already included. I never really thought about the brand and it wasn't a factor when we bought our refrigerator. The only thing I was concerned about was the color. Since the range and dishwasher were black the refrigerator needed to be black too.
We're in the process of building a new house, so we've had this conversation a million times with a million different professionals in the field. It seems the general consensus is that it is more important to have good quality appliances rather than all the same brand.
I'll probably make the decisions on what appliances to buy based on consumer reports.

If I were buying a single appliance as a erplacement, I might not worry about it too much, as long as I matched the finish and general style of the others. But I have to admit I do like it when the appliances match. I like it when the handle on the fridge matches the handle on the stove and microwave.
Now if I were buying very high end appliances and wanted to splurge on a Viking range or a sub zero fridge, tehn I woudl buy teh very best of each appliance. But what I have consistently done is to decide on a plrice range and quality of appliances, and focus on the one item I care about the most (for me, the stove). Then I buy the suite of the appliances at one time so they match. Generally, you get a much better deal pricewise as well. You certainly have mre leverage in negotiations (for example, we bought a set of four fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher and got 15% off plus free delivery and installation beyond the advertised sale price). I don't think you would get the same bang for the buck if you mixed between brands.
However, if I had to replace, say my dishwasher, I would just buy another stainless steel one. I might be swayed to keep in with the same manufacturer, but I wouldn't be overly bent in doing so as long as it conformed to the style of the other pieces.
I basically agree w/jajacobsen - for mid-range homes, I think it's nice when the appliances match and from a marketing perspective, it's appealing to buyer's to hear "SS Whirlpool Appliances" or "Brand New Black GE Appliances", etc.
However, for myself, I like to have the best I can do/afford within each category individually. So, we have a SS Maytag refrigerator (because they were the only ones making french door, bottom freezer + in-door water/ice dispenser at the time), GE Profile micro, oven & DW and DCS gas cooktop. I did pay attention to the details like the handle styles, control panels, etc. It all looks seemless, I think in large part just due to color though.
As a buyer, I don't think I'd even look to see if they're the same. I certainly wouldn't care. It's not a question that we've asked or even thought about in the houses we've looked at so far. As a current homeowner, it also never occurred to me to think about matching the brand. We matched color and made sure each one was appropriate for our space, but we only factored in brand as part of the price/value proposition, not for matching.
If I were buying a home, I would care that the appliances matched in style and color, but not in brand.
Ditto.
We just bought a Kenmore Elite dishwasher and a Whirlpool range. We will most likely purchase a Kenmore fridge in the coming months. However the mircowave we want to purchase is an LG.
