RE: Sounds; well, I am amazed at how sharp my Rubyn's hearing is and how sensitive he is to all kinds of sounds! When the tv is on, he is the one to respond to any animal making distress-sounds or dogs barking (Animal Planet, anyone?); always looking around for the source, big eyes and upright ears. Whereas the dog could sleep through pretty much anything.....

Our cat is also extremely sensitive to sound. I have one glass bowl that I use when I give her boiled chicken as a treat. Somehow she can hear a difference between that bowl and the bowls we use everyday. When I take that bowl out of the cabinet she comes running. It's amazing.

She can also tell the difference between our cars and our neighbors cars (we're in a row of townhouses, so all cars are out front). When she hears our cars she goes to the front door.

Our cat hates the sound of crying babies on tv and she will look all nervous until they stop.

This is a story from school (I'm a 4th year vet student), and I thought fellow cat lovers might get a kick out of it. (Crossposted from my LJ.)

So I'm sitting in radiology holding a cat, waiting to see what else we need for him. He was kinda squirmy at first, then turns around, looks deeply into my eyes and starts purring. I'm thinking, awwww, we're bonding! So sweet!

Yeah, no. He was peeing on me. That look on his face was a look of relief, not love.

One of my kitties can hear a laser pointer from anywhere in the house. She also knows which door is the guest bedroom door of the three (3) we keep closed upstairs to keep kitties out - it's the one she's allowed in the least and therefore is the most appealing to her. Both cats know when I am in the cabinet that has their food, toys, etc.

Our cats are similar. Our male loves the inkjet printer -- he comes running and has to stare at it every time. And try to get his paw inside it . But the weirdest is that our female adores the humidifier we keep in our bedroom. She doesn't move much, but she'll come running from anywhere in the house the second we remove the water tray to fill it up. It's her favorite part of the day and if we don't do it at the right time, she goes to it and meows for us to add the water.

She loves to drink the leftover water from there (I swear she has a full water bowl at all times) and she rubs against it like crazy. If our male tries to go near it, she shoos him away. She's a strange one...

I forgot about this! The same one that can diffenentiate the sound of doors opening loves the inkjet printer, too, and will watch it and attack the paper.

Our boys can tell when DH comes home. We live in the middle of the city and our garage for our scooters is across the street from us. But they can recognize both of our scooters and will go running to the door to wait for him to come in. It's a good 5 minutes btwn the time he puts the scooter away and comes upstairs too. I have no idea how they know it's his. I mean, there is a guy down the street from us that has the same exact scooter as I do (same color, same year and everything) yet they can still figure it out.

Princess also does this!! How funny! She is obsessed with that humidifier. She stares at it for hours, pawing at it and meowing. When it starts to run low she freaks out. It drives me nuts. The boys try to get at it because they wonder what is so interesting but she won't let them.

I really thought our cat was unique in that!

QUESTION: How do you know how much to feed your cats?

Our cats are both about 9 months old. From the start, we decided not to give them any people food (hard to stick with, but we've managed so far) and not to give them any canned food -- just dry in the bowl.

I had a cat for 18 years who got *very* fat and we didn't want to do that again. We'd also heard and read that nutritionally they don't need canned food and that if they never have it, they never miss it.

Since getting fixed a couple of months ago, our female has already gained a great deal of weight and is getting fat. She's very lethargic too. Our male is active and has gained weight too, as he gets bigger, which is natural. We were just refilling their food bowls whenever they got empty. DH thinks we should limit the amount of food they get now and if it's gone, it's gone till the next day. We've tried this for the past few days. They seem ok with it, but go nuts with happiness when I do go to fill up their bowls.

I want to give them the right amount for them to be healthy, but obviously I don't want to deprive them in any way or make them feel insecure about their food. I'll be asking the vet, but curious about others' experiences.

Honestly, we do not measure our our cat food. We used to when she was a kitten because we were concerned she wasn't eating enough. Now I just have it in one of those big feeder things where the food drops down into the bowl. The only time that I feel like our cat eats an excessive amount is when we go out of town. I think she eats to comfort herself so she gains a little weight when we go away. We use "indoor cat" food as I think it's a little less calories than the regular cat food. She just takes little bites here and there throughout the day. It would be easy enough to just scoop the recommended amount each morning though.
