Default Spin off: If you are a boss/supervisor...Christmas

If you are a boss or a supervisor do you do anything for the people who support you/work for you? I know that some people here are in that position so in the spirit of all things "big headed santa, hams, and skimpy bonus checks" I thought I'd see just how good our boss-ladies really are!

(FF to add what you do for co-workers, etc.)

Well, my assistant is Jewish, so I obviously don't do anything for her for Christmas. I did tell her that my Hannukah present to her was agreeing to have a difficult budget conversation with our project supervisor, instead of making her do it.

I give my receptionist and secretary a box of candy or chocolates. Just a small token of my appreciation.

In my small office, we share one paralegal and I give her a ton (and she totally kicks a$$), so I am thinking of doing something for her, but I'm not sure what. We already do an office gift exchange / secret santa. I will probably get her something extra and small to show appreciation.

I only supervise our adm assistant. We have an rule within my little department that gifts have to be made and supplies can not cost over $10. So, each year it is a challenge, but I try and get creative so she has something nice.

I have 9 people that report to me and each year I try to do something small (otherwise it gets out of hand money-wise) like candy and a gift card to Starbucks.

I have an assistant, 2 secretaries and 4 others I work closely with in my office. We do a gift exchange, but since I'm the principal I feel I should do something for everyone so I do get them each personal gifts because they are so great. We have about 75 staff so my assistant and I get a catered lunch for them one day. They really appreciate that.

I bake for my coworkers (6 total), per their request. I did it the first year I worked here and tied $10 coffee GCs to the top of the tins w/ gifts to our on campus coffee shop & they liked the baked goods so much they keep asking for that every year- they even have favorite requests. I try to add something new to the top of the package every year- this year I am doing plant-a-tree donation ornaments.

On top of that, I usually give my direct reports something additional (though my boss does not give me an additional gift, fwiw). I think I did wine last year, but I honestly don't remember. I think this year I will do $25 GCs to Borders. A huge gesture (ie. $$$) would be extremely abnormal here. I also take them to lunch, just for them (but I expense that part!).

We also do a big lunch/event for our instructors, and this year they are getting embroidered fleece throws as a gift.

I love the idea of the make-your-own $10 present as well as the baking idea. They are so personal and require you to really think about the person.

My husband's company (Construction-Stucco) employees about 15 people. We give them cash bonuses every year at Christmas. The amount depends on the year we had as well as how long each employee has been with us. The bonuses usually vary from about $800 to $150.
