OK I want to make a supercape for my little nephew who is 2. I want to be able to attach it without having something around his neck as a choking hazard. Here's what I was thinking: attach a large snap (the sticking-out side) to each corner of the shoulder. Then, attach the other side of the snap to a small ribbon and attach the ribbon to the shoulder part of the cape. To wear you would attach it to his shirt by putting the snap at the end of the ribbon under his shirt, snapping it to the shoulder of the cape and holding the fabric of the shirt between. so the cape would be attached to each should and there would be a little piece of ribbon running under his collar to the inside of the shirt. Would that work (would the snap hold fairly well, with fabric in between, do you think?)
How else would I be able to do it, if that wouldn't work?
On the one hand, I think it would work. But to be honest, I can't see a 2 year old being able to put it on by themselves, which makes me think it would get limited use. My dd's interest in dress up has really coincided with her ability to put clothes on herself.
I understand your concern about stuff around the neck. But I think you would be better off using a piece of velcro to attach it around the neck - obviously leaving a generous neck opening. Or even using the snaps. Also - be careful about length. Make sure it ends around waist length - you don't want the kiddo to step on it and trip.
If you go in the sewing thread, go back a couple pages and we had some discussions on making capes. There were some instructions posted, as well as some links to instructions and patterns. IIRC, the discussion was right around Halloween time.
I made my boys capes out of their old receiving blankets--I just used a piece of velcro at each of the top corners. They loved them, and seemed not to worry that a superhero would not have teddy bears and blocks printed on his cape.
Use the kind that is not super strong--some of those industrial types of velcro would be strong enough to not come undone if they caught on something.
Would this work--cape for toddler?
