Whenever I see things like "the" spelled "teh", I figure it's a typo. As passionate as I am about grammar and spelling (and I make mistakes too), I can't get all bent out of shape over someone mispelling a word on the internet. I also figure it could be keys sticking on the person's keyboard. Or, it could be a person who is dyslexic. It could be a number of things.
Some people are more skilled at writing, typing, and spelling. I don't know if that makes a person "smarter". I might be skilled with writing, but I am terrible at math! If knowledge of math were the only measure of one's intelligence, all of you would consider me to be incredibly stupid! Yet there are probably some people who are brilliant in math, but not so skilled with language arts.
In a way, I feel sorry for people who are not as skilled with language arts. I know in my own life, writing skills are much more valued than math skills. The only math I have had to use for a job would be anytime I have used a cash register, and even then it was very basic math and the cash register did most of the work for me.
The occasional mistake is one thing -- we're all human! -- but when I see posts peppered with typos and spelling mistakes, I can't help feeling like that person either doesn't care or doesn't have a great grasp of the language. I have many friends for whom English is their second or third language, and they write beautifully, both in emails/IMs and in their formal work product.
I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to my own spelling, but when others make mistakes it doesn't bother me. I chalk it up to an error. Many times I understand what they were trying to say anyway, so no big deal. I also tend to use word slang a lot. I'll say "cause" meaning "because". I wonder if that ever bothered anyone. I don't know, IMO, if someone sees that I typed anyway as anway by accident and they get bent out of shape about it, well then I think they care a bit too much.
I am SO out of the loop - I didnt know about the gamers slang, or that teh is used to emphasize what follows - but I didnt know about the toe tapping in the guys washrooms either..... so I will just plug in a different Lawrence Welk eight track and relax in my easy chair in my old polyester pantsuit clad body, and sip on some Tab.
(Typo's don't bother too much - I have a good imagination . Lack of punctuation is worse because I have to read something four times before I can make sense of it. But if it is riddled with typos to the point I am getting annoyed - then I just backCLIK!)
It seemed to me like it started to pop up with the increasing popularity of LOLCats. Or at least that's when I started to see it more often.
Thank you. You've just provided another avenue to waste time for me AND succeeded in making my DH think I'm crazier than ever! I've never seen this before and I LOVE it!
I always figured teh was a typo.
