I was just thinking the other day--should we get rid of the penny? Does it really have value in today's society? When was the last time you could buy something for under 5c (heck even the "cent" key isn't on computers anymore!)?
I find them on the ground. When I was in HS, boys would fling them around in the auditorium during Study Hall.
prices would have to be adjusted if there was no penny. Personally, I like if I can pay a few pennies less for something that I am buying. It's true you find them all over the place, but call me cheap, I like to save a few cents here and there still.

I agree with ericka. If we got rid of it, change would be hard to give. I like it, I just stick them in a jar with the rest of the change, and take them to the bank. It all spends the same to me!
I went through this about 15 (20?) years ago in Australia, when they got rid of both the one and two cent pieces. Despite predictions of doom and gloom, it went amazingly smoothly. Prices of any individual item can still be expressed to the nearest cent, and are rounded at the register (-6 and -7 are rounded down to -5, -8 and -9 are rounded up to 10), but only as a final step (so you'd sum three items worth 99 cents to get $2.97, which then gets rounded down to $2.95).

Ditto.
Also, it may sound childish, but I still enjoy finding a penny on the ground. It brings a second of glee to me--especially if it's headsup. As a matter of fact, I only pick it up if it's headsup.

And while we're at it, can we finally get rid of the $1 bill as well? That way the several dollar coins that have been introduced over the years will actually be used!!
