I would get the Nintendo just for the Super Mario games. Kids love Super Mario and Donkey Kong. Many of the other, more active, games are available on both consoles.

Does anyone have a Wii hooked up to an HD television? We haven't used our Wii in AGES, but I'm thinking we might start playing with it more if we have it connected to our flat panel with the proper cables. Right now, we're using the same cables as when we had the regular TV and it looks terrible.
So I am looking into getting a gaming console. We are not a "tech" family and don't care about having the latest technology. Neither DH nor I are into video games so no Call of Duty for us. DS has a Nintendo 3DS and likes Mario type games but I don't think we need to expand that to the big screen. So the primary purpose for the gaming console would be to play those motion type games like bowling or skiing to play together as a family. I don't want to spend a fortune and it looks like a Wii U or an Xbox would cost around $350. Target has a regular Wii bundle for $119. I'm tempted to order that since I think it would be good enough for us. Anything I'm not considering here?
Dragonfly - we are also not a tech family. We have a Wii (got it for the Wii Fit for me a few years ago). DD (nearly 5) is just getting into playing some things (THis week we have been doing bowling and last night she boxed. It was a LOT of fun to do something as a family that we all could enjoy - even DD2 - 18 months - took a remote and 'played' around us!). We have gotten a few games at WalMart in the $5-10 bins (We got Madagascar Carts, Nickelodian Fit, Wii Fit and Wii Sport). We also use it to stream Netflixs to our TV. Works for us. I just couldn't fathom spending $300 for something we use in spurts.
Maybe if we were to buy now we would look at xBox with Kinect just because DD has had a hard time figuring out remotes and aiming! (likely because we don't play much)

Yes my sister tells me too that Wii is more child friendly but by now I am getting really interested in the kinect for myself. Although I still don't want to spend that much money on something that may turn into a door stopper in a couple of months.
dragonfly Are you opposed to a used unit? Game Stop sells used stuff and I'm quite sure there's some sort of guarantee that they work. I know on the games they sell they are guaranteed to work.
