We are looking to do a family reunion type of vacation next August. Our family lives all over the country so we have to plan way in advance, since there will be some fliers and some drivers.
I've been searching for a house to rent in the Outer Banks NC but don't know where to start.
There will be 7 families with 15 kids, ranging in age from 22 to 8. Most of them are teenagers.
What area of the Outer Banks will best suit the teens? They need something to do, preferably within walking distance so they are far from us! The adults plan to relax on the beach, with a couple nights out for dinner. Nothing fancy.
I figure we will need 10 bedrooms/baths.
Recommendations for areas or places that cost less than $8500?

Darn I just lost my whole post. I've been going down to OBX for the last 25 years. We go to Cape Hatteras further south but it sounds like the Nags Head/Kitty Hawk area would work for you better as there is much more to do. Not sure about places to rent but you should be able to find realtys easily online.

Here's an older thread on the Outer Banks which may have a little info you can use. You might want to PM ManteoChik. She lives there, I believe, and should have lots of helpful info for you. Good luck!
Here's a thread on Fodors about house rentals in the Outer Banks. Many of those people are suggesting using vrbo.com to find a house. I've used vrbo myself for a beach house rental in CA and had a good experience.
we have been using Village Realty for years to rent in OBX. You can do a search for the kinda house you need (ie. number of rooms, amenities, etc.). We normally rent a 6-8BR house. This year we have an 8br house that can sleep 20+ even though we only have 4 families going (we like our space, lol)
I agree that Nags Head/Kitty Hawk is prob a good area for you. We stay in S. Nags Head. Keep in mind that OBX is not a hoppin' place, pretty chill IMO. I guess older kids can walk to places but I wouldn't be keen on the idea.
Are there not many grocery stores nearby? I only saw one Food Lion listed. Whats up with that???
We stayed in Corolla once and IIRC, there is only the Food Lion (i think it's the main grocery store down there) down that way. I know in Nags Head area, there's a new Harris Teeter.
As a local, I would have to disagree and say that if I were vacationing here on the OBX I would not stay in Duck or Corolla - its too far away from everything. There are some shops, restaurants, and some water activities but most people that stay up there really don't venture out away from their rental cottage. However, if you do go that route there IS a Harris Teeter (super awesome grocery store) in Corolla now as well as the Food Lion.
I would suggest looking into the Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk area because there is more to do. Lots more shopping, restaurants, and activities. You can still do all the same kayaking, jet skiis, parasailing as you can in duck but much more. Add that to the list of Hang gliding, The Lost Colony, The NC Aquarium, The Elizabethan Gardens, The Elizabeth II, Wright Brothers Monument - which is all located in Manteo (on Roanoke Island) or in the Nags Head area.
ETA: Be prepared to spend more than you budget for a house with at least 10 bedroom, especially since you are planning on being in town "in season".

Don't ask the locals for directions, they already lost one colony!
