I don't know if anyone here can help me figure this out or direct me to somewhere else.
Over the past week or so, every few days I've noticed a bug flying around...just a smallish bug with wings kind of like a moth (but not as big as a typical moth...more like the size of a fly). I've started to kill them when I see them and they didn't seem to be a major problem. I've noticed them mostly in our office and once in the living room.
Well, today I've seen and killed at least 5-6 of them (one in the upstairs hallway and the rest in the office which is on the main floor)! I don't know what they are or where they're coming from, but I'm starting to worry that either something is attracting them inside, or something has come in and laid eggs or somewhere and now they're starting to hatch and come out. They don't seem to be hurting anything (they don't seem to be interested in the kitchen or to be going after food) but it just icks me out to have bugs in the house. Plus the cat is going a bit nuts chasing them when she sees them...she is starting to jump up onto furniture she normally wouldn't because she'll see one and wants to try to catch it.
Does anyone have any ideas what these could be and where they could be coming from? I guess I might have to call an exterminator or something, but since I can't figure out what they are or where they're coming from (and I've only seen maybe 12 total) I'm not sure what an exterimator will be able to do.
Anyone have a similar experience or any idea what these could be/what to do about them?
I don't mean to scare you, but a friend of mine had something similar happen recently. She started noticing those giant black flies (horse flies?) in her condo, and it got to the point where she was killing 20+ a day... she was pretty convinced eggs had been laid in a wall somewhere or something. She didn't do anything about it (fumigate, exterminator, etc) and the problem eventually resolved itself. But if I were you, I'd feel more comfortable calling an exterminator and describing the problem instead of waiting it out. They may be able to give you advice, or be able to ID the bug, or tell you that they need to come and do some work in your house... doesn't hurt to call!
Houseplants and old food can result in the moths/flies you have in your house. One time in college, we had a bag of potatoes that was the source of moths. Recently, I had a tupperware filled with pistaticios that got old. That was the source of the moths.
Licensed exterminator here (scary thought, huh?). I used to work for Orkin as a Commercial Inspector, so I never actually did the killing. It's impossible to tell based on your description what kind of insect you have. Have you seen any in the kitchen? What about indoor plants?
Your best bet is to use pheromone traps to try to find the source. Once you discover that, throw it away & clean everything in the vicinity. You can also call a Pest Control company, and they will have you sign up for a monthly or bimonthly treatment. Since all services are guaranteed & call-backs free, it's not a bad idea.
