Born: 10/10/06- emergency c-section under general anesthesia due to placental abruption
Stats: 5 pounds 1 ounce, 17 3/4 inches
weight and height at 4 months: 12 pounds 2 ounces, 24 inches
I started having bleeding and contractions at 33 weeks 2 days. I was hospitalized for three days on bed rest with mag sulfate. I was home for one and back in the hospital the next day with more bleeding. At first we thought I would deliver vaginally that day. But it became clear that a c-section was needed. Within 5 minutes of deciding I needed a c-s, the doctors said, "nope, we are going for an emergency c-section under general anesthesia- NOW!" They bleeding had really increased. Apparently it was a very close call and we are lucky that both of us are healthy and doing well!
Wes spent a week in the NICU for feeding and temp issues, jaundice and strep B infection. Our NICU was fantastic! It was a new NICU and each baby had their own room with a couch, sink and mini fridge for EBM. The nurses were great and very helpful. It was not the doctor or hospital I had planned to deliver with. It was a full moon and all the hospitals were full. I was redirected to a hospital with a Level III NICU. Wes never successfully BFed and I am exclusively pumping- still at 4 months! He is healthy and surprisingly strong. He just started wearing 3-6 months clothes yesterday at 4.5 months. He has plagiocephaly. He has been getting PT which has helped a great deal with his muscles. But it looks like he will still need a helmet to allow his head to fill out. He is a bit stubborn and really likes to lay to one side, no matter what I do. He is a very good natured baby. He pretty clearly communicates his needs and started STTN at about 3 months.

weight and height at 2 yrs: 27lb, 33" on his birthday (35" as of last month)
DS2: Adam
Born: 10/16/05, officially 38w1d
Stats: 5lb 1oz, 17.5"
weight and height at 6 months: 24", 16lb
weight and height at 1 yr: 20lb, 26"
Josiah at birth:
Although he wasn't to 37 weeks yet, the doctors decided to not call him a preemie because he was doing well for his size, just needed a little help for his jaundice.
Adam at birth:
Going by my LMP, I was 38 weeks when I had Adam. However, after he was born, it was concluded that he was only at the development of a 34 week baby. No idea where we lost 4 weeks! The delivering doctor looked over my u/s again and said she wouldn't have done anything differently from my OB. Because of the underdevelopment, and swallowing fluid during birth, Adam had a 2 week stay in the NICU. I was scared to hardly touch him for the first couple of days. We were warned against stroking his skin, because he would still be very sensitive, and it was recommended to only very gently pat. I was scared to do even that much because my hands are so rough from having very dry skin
Question for you ladies on adjusted age- did your pediatrician adjust for things like smiling? My little guy is 7 weeks old (2 weeks adjusted age) and he isn't smiling yet.
la bride - my DS was 5wks early and gave me my first smile at 7 weeks old! (2 weeks adjusted age). I think initially he was behind developmentally (didn't hold his head up as early/well as term babies, etc). But now he's blowing past other kids with things like crawling, signing, the pincer grasp and pulling himself to standing. My ped doesn't chart his weight for his adjusted age, only is actual birth date, so he's only in the 2-3%, but he's still doing great. I bet you get a smile ANY DAY NOW!
for James...no. he hit his targets pretty much with his age-all within normal limits. my ped didn't even go by the preemie growth chart...he's always put him on the "regular" chart. another ped in his practice felt that DS was done being a preemie at his 9 month appt.
My ped follows the "regular" chart, but also expects to see some minor delays. He didn't really start looking at milestones until his 4 month WBV. DS had met most or just starting to show signs of starting others. (he was a bit behind in his motor skills). Keep in mind, there is a time frame for each developmental milestone to appear. I just expect to see milestones occur on the later end of the time frame. If they occur earlier, even better! Try not to stress, enjoy your baby and I bet you will see smiles very soon!
My ped's office goes by the regular chart. I asked a nurse about what chart they use and she said it's the regular. My ped said that he may not meet milestones as soon as other babies his age, but it's ok. We have been blessed in that he actually meets all the milestones on time if not a little early.
