Default Anyone induced with vaginal misoprostol?

My dr mentioned to me today at my 37w appt that due to the fact that I have gestational diabetes, they will not let me go late and would like to see me deliver around my due date. She said they don't like to induce when the cervix is not ready because that increases the chance of c-section by 3x and they would rather not perform an "unnecessary surgery". But because of his current size and the fact that he could be even bigger due to the gestational diabetes, they would want to go ahead and induce me in the 39th week (if I have not progressed on my own). She said I would come in at night and have the misoprostol inserted and then go back in the morning to get checked and then I guess we would go from there. Sorry I'm kind of sketchy on the details-she only touched upon it briefly and said we would talk more about it next week.

I'm just curious if anyone else was induced this way? What was your experience? How long were you in labor? Did you end up having to have a c-section?

    TIA!

If I can remember correctly (it's been a whole 5 years now ) when my 1st DD was born, my water broke at home, but I was not contracting at all. Also I was barely a centimeter dialated so they said it was too early for pitocin. But they inserted something on my cervix to help it dialate.I had to stay in the hospital, because my water had broken. It took about 6 or 8 hours but it did start to work and then when I was dialated enough (yet still not contracting), they started pitocin. After that it was about a hour and I was ready to push. I had the baby vaginally, she was 7 lbs, 2 oz.

My OB discussed using this to induce me. We talked about it at a couple of visits. We never actually had to cross the bridge because my water broke the day before we were scheduled to be induced.

Most OBs don't want to induce when the cervix isn't 'ripe' as it increases the chances of having to do a c-section.

My SIL was induced with the gel in her cervix. Sorry I dont know the exact details. She went in at 4 pm but I dont think they did the gel till later that night and they started her pitocin about 7ish the next morning. Her son was born before 2 pm that afternoon, vaginally. From what I understand it was a pretty easy labor. She did have to stay on her back because of the gel but I think that might be a preference of the DR, because I wasnt allowed to move when I was induced and I only had pitocin.

Sorry I wasnt any more help

Holly, thanks for the link. I had a feeling this was the drug I had heard and read about on WC a couple months ago, but I couldn't seem to find any info on the net beyond what would/could happen in a VBAC situation (which does not apply to me, obviously). ugh.

Thanks everyone else for your replies!

hi there. with #2 i was induced with the gel. i was having some contractions that morning when i left for the hospital but was still not dialated when i got there. the doctor told me that they usually insert the gel, wait and check in one hour and let the mom leave if she hasn't dialated anymore and come back in 6 hours (unless she feels the need to go back earlier). within half hour i was having contractions. i honestly think that if i wasn't induced that morning i would have had ds that day anyway. so, my contractions started around 8:30, they broke my water around 4:30 and ds was born at 6:44pm. no c-section. good luck to you.
oh--i had to lay on my back for that first hour after they inserted the gel before they came in to check me. that is so the gel doesn't leak out. i was induced with pitocin for #1 and was able to move.. until i got my epidural, then i had to stay in bed.
