Default Anyone know how to take mildew out of cloth?

My husband has this antique ruck sack that he despirately wants to make smell better. It was from his childhood and had been stored away in his parents' attic for years. But now that it has been rediscovered he'd like to put it to use again or at least display it (it is a pretty cool sack). It has a bit of a mildew smell to it. Any ideas for taking the smell out? I thought of bleach but don't want to discolor the sack. Would oxiclean help?
    Suggestions greatly welcomed.

You could try hand washing it with a mild soap (woolight or ivory liquid) and then putting it out to dry in the sun. Or, you could try rinsing it with a diluted solution of vinegar and water.

What about color-safe bleach? I've never tried it, but friends have and haven't had a problem.
