Here's a question that I haven't seen addressed yet: If you know the bridesmaids are wearing black dresses, is it ok to wear a little black dress to the wedding? If it matters at all, I believe the bridesmaids are wearing floor length gowns and the dress I have is about knee-length.
my b-maids wore long black dresses..and the ONLY guest i remember being similarly dressed was a girl who wore a long black dress...in a similar style (grr) so w/that said it'd be a faux pas (IF your dress was long)
but i think a "little black dress" would be fine. you can always add some color w/a wrap, or accessories...

how in the world could a guest know what color the bridesmaid dresses were going to be? for a formal event, you do need a long dress, and many women wear black, long dresses. i have never heard of a rule that you couldn't wear a similar color to the bridesmaids. also, black bridesmaid dresses seem to be a pretty new trend, so a lot of women may not even think that the bridesmaids would be wearing black.

ITA with this. It would be impossible for the typical guest to know how the bridesmaids will be dressed.

Default Just a vent about dresses

My Mom and I went shopping for dresses for two upcoming weddings (one in 2 weeks and another in March) is it me or are they making clothes smaller these days!! I'm serious! Most of my clothes in my closet range from size 7 to size 9 and while I was trying on those sizes they barely fit me when I know I haven't put on 20 lbs. in the past few months I've lost 12! I seriously think they are making clothes smaller. For example I'm in the wedding in March and when we were trying on the BM gowns (the bride got them at Jcpennys) they were on sale prom gowns, I had to get a size 11 to even fit me. I think a size 7 to a size 11 is HUGE jump, lol. Sorry just had to vent.

at the end I didn't find a dress. *sigh*

perhaps, the prom gowns are made with a junior fit. i find that when i wear junior clothes, i have to go up a size or two bc it seems that junior clothes are made for girls without curves.

The BM dress is a junior fit. Most of the dresses I tried on were junior. I tried looking in the womens' deparment but I couldn't find anything for my style. Do they seriously think that women have no curves and that we all weigh 100 lbs. lol

That's the difference between Juniors & Womens. For the most part, the latter clothes are cut a bit more generously, though higher-end trendy designers still don't understand the concept of a chest.

And actually, I've been thinking the exact opposite. Most mid-scale designers (Banana Republic, Ann Taylor) are cutting their clothes a size or two larger than they were 10 years ago. Higher-end & high-end designers are cutting them just slightly larger.

I find this so irritating!!! I have size eight Banana Republic and Gap clothes from the college era that I can barely zip up, yet now I wear a size four there. If this trend continues people are going to be wearing negative sizes in a few years!!

On topic...I almost always wear a little black dress to weddings. It's what I like and what I look good in, and unfortunately I can't afford to buy a new dress for every event. I know it's still taboo in some parts of the country, but from the weddings I've been to and the many I have seen in passing (my Sunday afternoon run takes me past a popular outdoor wedding spot!), it's pretty standard wedding attire for women around here.

It sounds like you should be looking in the Misses section and not the Juniors section. As a PP said, Misses clothes are cut for women who have a shape and curves.

I would but I am junior, lol. I'm 21. When I do go into the misses department I find that the dresses aren't really what I'm looking for. Does that make any sense? I did find some that I liked and fit okay but the price was more than I could afford.
