I had an interview with a company in Seoul, Korea a week and a half ago (DH and I are moving there in the fall). It was a very positive interview, and, needless to say, I REALLY REALLY want the job. Anyway, the woman I spoke to said that she can't make the decisions to hire/fire, so she was going to refer me on to her supervisor, who would then contact me to set up an appointment. Well, it's been 10 days, and I haven't heard from her supervisor. I contacted the woman a few days ago, just to check in, and she said that she'd forwarded my resume on.
I'm getting really antsy. Do you think they were nicely blowing me off? Am I being impatient? How much longer should I wait until I inquire again?
I hate to say this, but if they don't call you back then you probably didn't get it.
DH has been on a few interviews they past 2 years and only got one call back. The others, when he called for some sort of confirmation, always said they would get back to him and didn't.
Frankly, I think this is so rude and such bad business practice to leave people hanging. It's not the 90s anymore...
I see all these moms who can do everything and I think... I should have them do something for me..
Yeah, see that's what I was thinking, too...the only thing (legitimately) that makes me think this could be something else is this:
The supervisor is based out of Tokyo, so I don't know what the procedure is like in sending things back and forth/talking to people/etc. Also, the woman who forwarded my resume had been in Singapore for a week on a business trip, so maybe she hadn't had a chance to talk to him before that. Also, they know we're not moving before September (at the earliest), so that may play into it, too.
She told me that she thought I was a "perfect fit" and that she was going to recommend to her supervisor that I be hired. So now I'm just confused.
I interviewed Tuesday March 21 and was told I would know in a day or 2.
The FOLLOWING monday I emailed to ask if they had made a decision and was told they would get back to me by the end of the week. And at that point they did. Turns our one of the hiring managers had a sick kid and was out of the office for 3 days.
Tuesday March 21 I also had another interview and they didn't call me back for close to 2 weeks. Then they set up another interview.
Dependin on how quickly they need to hire, or if they know you don't want to start until fall... they may be slower then if they are filling an open position.
Good luck!

Right now, we do not have any specific openings that would allow us to pursue deeper engagement. However, in August, we do have someone leaving and that may provide an opportunity for you. As such, I think it would be best to have you come in and proceed with a face to face meeting with myself as well as the Managing Director of the Korea office and possibly Managing Director, Asia if he is in town.
Please contact me when you settled down in Korea and we can discuss how to move forward.
I think it means that they liked you and think you be a good fit for the compnay but that they dont' have a position that suits you right now. (Or possibly it means that they like you and think you'd be an asset but that there was a better person for the specific job that you interviewed for, so they are hopefully that they can find soemthign esle for you.)
I would send back a note thanking them for their letter (email?) and that you will follow up with them periodically to see if there is anythign availbel, and will definitley contact them when you have firm dates for your arrival in Korea. I'd also gush about hte compnay a little. Something along the lines of, "I recgonize that Acme Advertising, Inc. is at the forefront of the marketing and advertising market and I would be thrilled to be a part of your organization. I will stay in contact with you to see if anything has opened up and will notify you when i have firm dates for my arrival in Korea. " etc.

Villanelle -- I just talked to my husband about it (poor DH, busy at work, with me whining down the phone for 20 mins), and he said the same thing you just did -- that they like me, but that they did the right thing froma mgmt. standpoint. This is what I ended up writing back:
Dear Person Who Interviewed Me,
Thank you for letting me know. I understand, especially as our move is not imminent at this point. I do have a question, though -- my husband may need to stay here later than October due to a medical issue, but I would be able to come out to Korea earlier. Would it make sense for me to re-visit this with you in August to look at my chances? I am asking because I do not want to miss the "slot" of the person leaving due to timing, and we may not be settled in Korea until November if I wait here with him. As I said in our phone call, I will be leaving my job in mid-summer (nost likely), and my time will be quite flexible after that. I would very much like to work with Company X, and I am willing to do a lot towards that end. I am looking at, and interviewing with, other companies, but Company X remains my first choice by a long shot.
On a personal note -- I don't know if you are able to tell me this, but I was wondering if you had a general idea of how my chances with Company X lie. Of course, moving overseas to a new place is always a bit nerve-wracking and scary, but some of that was alleviated for me when I found what I felt was my "match" professionally -- so now I am a bit anxious as to the likelyhood of how this will all turn out.
You make very clear that you like company X, that you are willing to work around their scheduale to be placed with them, and that you really like company X! Though, I would look at clarifying the language a bit.
If you haven't sent that note out... May I suggest that you remove the entire last paragraph? It makes you sound... needy. Which can be a big turn off in a job scnerio.
