Default Part-Time Work or Work From Home Jobs?

    Hello!

I am an teacher who just lost part of her job

They cut my teaching position in my county so I am going from full-time, 5 days a week, to teaching part-time (3 days a week). This particular teacher market in our area is now FLOODED with job applicants becasue of this cut so I am grateful for my 60% position, but I am not grateful for the $700 a month I am loosing

I can recover some of this in teaching private lessons, but that requires work in the late afternoons/evening becasue most kids are in school during the day. I would rather work while my husband is also at work like we do now.

I'm looking for some ideas for part-time work or jobs you can do from home that I could work on two days a week. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your job. This sounds like what happened to a lot of teachers here in the Atlanta area. Your not in the Atlanta area are you?

Anyway, I don't know if this would help, but this opportunity is very part-time meaning it's not something you would do all of the time. The opportunities come up every couple of months and then you decide if you want to do it or not based on your current schedule. But it's grading essays and short compositions for Pearson online. You could possibly grade anywhere from middle to high school, depending on what you put on your application. I think you could also grade math if you have a degree in math. But they will guide you on the application.

Here is a link. On the bottom left, you'll see a menu, click on Scoring At Home. You'll find more info there. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm actually on my second assignment with them right now.

    Pearson

    Good luck to you.

I'm sorry to hear about your job situation. I am just starting to work from home. I have a 3 month old & I really do not want to put him in daycare, so I started looking for ways to be home with him.

This job you can do as little or as much as you want. Obviously the more you put in, the more you will get out of it. But that's why I chose this because at this point my baby is pretty demanding & I don't get a lot of time to work.

If you want to talk more about it & see if it's something that you would be interested in, you can send me a private message.

    Cookie....I PMed you...

When everyone got their contracts on Friday before spring break, I got notice that my program was being cancelled and therefore I did not have a job. Other programs like foreign language, SST, and special support were also cut. It was just awful and so sad.

Luckily I have an AMAZING principal (who did not want this to happen) who has already hired me back for as much time as she could.

I am trying not to be bitter or angry about it and just accept it and deal with it. I am in grad school right now so next year I will have a master's degree in my field as well and I am trying not to feel like I earned my masters degree for nothing.

Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out! (And I'll quit venting!)

    hey stranger!

Sorry to hear about your job, but it sounds like you did get a little lucky. You know that I make awesome income waiting tables for a PT job. Could you tutor one or two late afternoons a week? DH made good money doing that.

Adaya, Yes, I am in the Atlanta area, in Fulton County actually. When everyone got their contracts on Friday before spring break, I got notice that elementary band and orchestra programs were being cancelled and therefore I did not have a job. Other programs like foreign language, SST, and special support were also cut. It was just awful and so sad. I had just gotten back from a field trip with my chorus to the FC Music in Our Schools Month Concert when I was told the news....pretty ironic, eh?

Again, so sorry to hear about that. But you're right, the good news is that you still have something left. I heard about it on the news and in the AJC. I just don't understand the choices that these people in upper administration make sometimes. I teach at Georgia Perimeter in the ESL/Foreign Languages department and we were talking about it and we were all just amazed at how they could just shove people out of their jobs in all of those fields.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Once you get your Master's next year, you could apply for a part-time position at the colleges and universities. That is how I got my foot in the door where I am now. I know GPC has a required Music Appreciation course and I'm sure many of the other schools do. The pay is pretty decent and the commitment is minimal. I know that is long-term thinking, but that is another option to think about.

I think the tutoring suggestion was a good one. I have done that and have made great money.

    Oh my gosh, that's terrible!

Don't they realize that there is a measurable link between music education and other cognitive development, like math skills? Not to mention that the arts have intrinsic value in themselves in creating a well-rounded human being.

And foreign language ::jaw drops:: What the H*** are they doing in Fulton County? As a parent, I'd be very, very unhappy.

    I'm sorry!

Basically it's just introducing people to the business & they decide whether or not they want to be involved on any level. You can work as little or as much as you like. There is no selling, stocking products, cold calls.. or anything like that. The only people you talk to are people who have contacted you regarding home based businesses. Of course you could talk to other people if you wanted to, but mostly the business works that way.

I started because I need to start building a business that will allow me to work from home, while travelling with my husband wherever his job takes him, which is anywhere in the country or world depending on the year. I also do not want to put my son in daycare at all! So both of those things are huge motivators for me.

I also needed something that I could work at my own pace since I have a 3 month old & he doesn't really allow me much time to work at this point. Yet another thing that interested me in the business was the ability to continue to build my income rather than being stuck in a set salary.

Some people do the business for a little extra money and others replace salaries with it. So it's really however works best for each person. Feel free to PM me if you want any more information!

I completely understand! I have a hard time making any plans with not knowing what my husband is doing from one year to the next so I know where you're coming from. The unknown can make things hard sometimes. Unfortunately that is one of the downfalls of his job. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it. Well maybe once I'm making enough to not care! haha.. But just get back to me whenever works best for you.
