    Default Paci or thumb?

Girls, I have 2 questions for you

1-If you DC uses a paci, has he ever been able to stay stuck with it in his mouth? DS did that again last night, and scared the crap out of my again. He doesn't really use his paci for sucking. He does a bit, and then plays with it. Since a month maybe, he has started this thrend of sucking the handle, and the plastic rim. He shoves it so deep in his mouth that when he tries to remove it sometimes, it is stuck there, and he panics. If tht has ever happened to you, what did you do to prevent it?

2- in the same line of idea, should I keep giving him his paci? I'm scared that he will hurt himself good eventually. But i'm also concerned about him solely sucking his thumb. He does it when he doesn't have his paci, and I can already see that his nail a bit flattened by it. Anybody knows if a paci is better then the thumb, and what are the damages that can be caused to his thumb by sucking on it?

    TIA!

I am not a mother so this is not coming from experience with children. I am, however, a woman who as a child sucked on my thumb until I was 6 years old. I developed a sever overbite because of it and had surgery latter in my life to correct it. That was its only "downfall" because of sucking my thumb.

Don't know about the paci, but our DD is a thumb-sucker and has been for quite some time. The worst that's happening thus far are some big calluses on her thumbs (she sucks both equally). She's almost 17 mos.

My DS has never taken to a pacifier. He has found his thumb at times or his other fingers.
I sucked my fingers till I was 10!! eek! Like the other poster stated, it only caused an overbite (that braces fixed) and I still have very small calluses on those two fingers. I think I actually like having DS suck on his fingers rather than a paci. They are always there and handy! LOL! Sorry, stupid pun.

    Val,
What size pacis are you using? Cassidy used to do that and once DH pulled the paci out in such a panic that she started BLEEDING. So awful. Anyways, after that, we switched to pacis for babies 6+ months and older. The pacis are MUCH bigger and the plastic part is also bigger. I think they are by Mam.

I think there are pros and cons to paci using and thumb sucking. We've always stuck with the paci because you can take it away and you can't take the thumb away. That being said, my 18 month old still is a paci addict despite numerous attempts to take it away.

    Good luck deciding.

DD never got it stuck, but she used pull it out and play with it, and suck on all the wrong parts for a couple minutes until she realized it wasn't as satisfying as when mommy plugs it in. At about 7.5 months, she figured out how to do it right, and now just pops it in by herself.

Try different ones, but let him keep trying to figure it out on his own.

DD sucked her fingers until 4 months, which is when she finally accepted a pacifier, and hasn't looked back. She doesn't really suck her fingers now, but as soon as she spots the paci, she goes for it. Otherwise, it's mostly out of sight, out of mind.

    Thanks ladies!

I agree with the fact that it is easier to remove a paci then the fingers, but he finds his thumb at night, so I'm not complaining. Kinda help him go back to sleep on his own.... I guess I'll keep doing a little of both. Nobody seems to have suffer too much by sucking their thumb while being young.

jkiI have a NUK 6 months, but I have to say that the plastic rim isn't really bigger then the 0-3 months. Maybe I'll check for bigger one, because honnestly, I REALLY don't like it when he gets stuck like that. I saw Mam's paci somewhere around here, I'll check into that. I really don't what this to happen again.

This is how I use to see it too! But i've heard my mom telling me SO many times that it can cause problems to the fingers, themouth, blah blah blah, that I didn't know anymore...
