Sometimes I let DS watch it on his own, without my interrupting.
Other times I sit by his side and 'talk' him through it ("that's a black puppy, see the kangaroo" etc).
Other times I let him play in his Exersaucer with the DVD on in the background, and he listens to it.
I feel like I could make it more of an experience if I did something more...though I don't know what that would be. Of course, it's not like I let him watch it for very long or more than 1x a day, but he really enjoys them and I'd like to maybe make it more interactive.
DS is 5 months old - do you have any suggestions?
Do you do anything special when they are on?
My answer is a bit facetious but I do DD's hair while she watches a Baby Einstein DVD - it's the only way I can get her to sit still! So she usually watches about 10 minutes of one in the morning. She's 9.5 months. That's all she watches other than Sesame Street sometimes.
We were watching Baby Bach and when the Whoozit came out, I brought out ours and DS went nuts- he was so excited by it. I think I am going to try to find a few more toys that they use. He really seems to get a kick out of them.
My nephew was soooo into Baby Einstein. He's sit in his exosaucer and just *stare* at the tv. If you tried to talk to you, he's "shoo" you away without even turning his head away from the tv. It was the funnist thing. Then he'd start playing with the things on his exosaucer, like rolling the wheel when that came on the tv. It was so interesting just to watch how into it he was!!

My 2 year old has watched the videos since he was 3 months old exclusively at bedtime. Now he gets a cup of water with his video (before it used to be a bottle) and no exaggeration, when the movie ends he gets up and walks to his crib and goes right down to sleep. Bedtime is the only time he gets to watch them (although he occasionally watches them at daycare) and for him it his signal to calm down and go to bed. Like you, sometimes I point things out, sometimes I read a magazine. He points stuff out to me every time he watches them even though he's been watching them for almost 2 years now.

I don't think there is much more you can so at such a young age, other than maybe getting a few of the toys. We got the chicco shape car and it was a big hit for a long time, in fact I pulled it out today and DS sat down to play with it again and he is 2 now and mastered it months and months ago. My sister got the puppets and my niece liked them. We also have a few of the books.
When he starts watching the ones for a year and older there is more you can do. Talk about the way the elephant is playing a joke on the other elphant, explaining why it is funny. Making connections between the thing in the video and in real life, "remember when we went to the beach and you played in the water?" "Do we have a dog or a cat in our house?" I also change the language choice now and than to expose DS to more language, but he his a word sponge and loves learning new words in English, Spanish or Sign.
You may also want to look into the signing time videos if you want something more interactive.
And for us, we use the video to cut nails once a week and that is usualy the only time he gets to watch. He will ask to have his nails cut. Handy connection to have made while he was early.
