If you’re an active Vox member we encourage you to read the information below about what's happening during the month of September, and learn more about how you can migrate your content.
What you need to know

* As of September 2, Vox is no longer accepting new user registrations. If you have an existing Vox account you can continue to sign in to manage your account and view posts from your neighborhood.

I'm hoping that I'm right in this situation but I have a feeling I will have to chalk it up as a learning experience.

I'll try to make this brief. Basically, I ordered a "Like New" Twilight Eclipse book from a 3rd party Amazon seller on the Aug. 25. Paid $3.74 + 3.99 s/h. The book arrived on the 31st in HORRIBLE condition. It was hardcover and the front cover was really banged up and both covers had tears in them. The book was only sent in a brown envelope. No padding, no extra cardboard, nothing. The book also is what I assume is a book club edition because it's half the size of the regular books. I'm sure most of the damage happened in transit but i also feel that the shipper should have packed the book better. Can't complain about the book club thing because I honestly don't remember if that was specified or not.

Sent the seller an e-mail on the 31st and got no response. Sent another e-mail on the 2nd asking for a refund and a pre-paid shipping label. At this point, I have no use for the book and I don't feel like I should have to pay return s/h for their lack of proper packaging. The book was for someone else as kind of a gift. Yes, a cheap gift but it was more like a small token of thanks and I saw her today so I ended up having to buy a replacement in a b&m store.

Today, I get an e-mail back saying it's their policy to send a replacement and they will reship as soon as I send back the damaged book. So wth! Am I wrong for wanting my $$ back and for not wanting to dish out another $3 to send it back to them?

So much for brief :o

When I started here, our offices were under another division. I am not really religious but I do my part when asked. My job is not religious.

I am taking a course this semester in social problems. We have to take sides on the abortion issue. While I am pro choice, the college supports pro life.

There are also several more issues that my personal opinion differs from the college philosophy. I keep my opinions to myself at work and in general.

I know alot of students in class. They visit my office frequently.

Do I give the opinions of the college as my own so I don't look like a bad employee or do I really say what I feel?

I need my job! I don't want to cause waves but I want to be able to be myself in classes like all the other students.

What would you do?

I have a graduate student who I really like, and I've sort of ended up as a mentor to her, even though we're about the same age (mid 30s). She has 3 kids -- 11 year old (super brilliant and really active in the community), 3 year old, 1 year old (unplanned). She and her husband are both full time students. She used to work in a factory, hated it, had some addiction issues and finally decided to get her life together and go back to school. Her husband had some issues, but he also decided to got back to school. So they both finished undergrad, and both are finishing up graduate degrees in different fields. Amazing story really, very inspiring.

The issue: Neither her nor her husband want to work! They both love school and want to continue to be students and get another degree each. They are living off of financial aid with three kids, and I just wrote a pleading email to the university administration to try to get her one more semester of tuition waiver (which is unlikely) because they're desperate for money. I can understand one of them staying home (the husband most likely) - with two young kids daycare can cost more than he would make. But she keeps telling me that working in an office would kill her.

She just asked me if I could write her a reference letter for another master's program, and it's giving me heart palpitations.

Am I crazy to want to smack her upside the head?????

It sounded like fun, but due to some transitions here at home I have not committed yet.

2 months ago, a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. She is in chemo right now and the medical bills are stacking up. A mutual friend is putting together a fundraiser, which I volunteered to help. Originally it was scheduled for mid-September, but I got an e-mail this morning that it was moved to the Saturday of the birthday weekend.

So which do I choose?

First, DH HATES is job. He is in IT and is currently working for a company that treats their staff horribly. Not counting vacation time, DH has had 4 weekends off this whole year. Even though there is an on-call schedule, he gets calls to fix things all.the.time. For example, he was assigned to do an upgrade last night that was to start at 9pm and end at 5am this morning. Friday night he worked from 9pm - 2am prepping for this assignment (that is in addition to putting in a full 9 hour day.) Yesterday morning at 8am, he got a call from someone asking him to fix something. There is a whole team of highly paid, well qualified people who are suppose to be engaged in these situations, but instead this person chose to that and called him directly. He told them to engage the proper people. Later, DH found out that the manager of the person who called him called DH's manager and tried to strong arm him into making DH take this call. If it wasn't for the fact that DH had to work last night, he would had had to take that call. There are times that he puts in 70 hours a week. To add insult to injury, he finds the work uninteresting and feels like he is floundering professionally.

So this past week he interviewed for a job that seems wonderful. According to the person he interviewed with (and the people that he knows who are currently employed with this company) this company take great pains to not burn out their people. If he worked the weekend then he would be given the next 2 days off and no more all night working sessions. The work is challenging, and there are many opportunities to train on new technologies and to grow within the company.

The catch is he would have to travel 80% of the time. Currently is is telecommuting 100% of the time (although with his work schedule, we hardly see him.) We are trying to wrap our minds around the idea of him traveling so much and keeping things running at home with me working part time and caring for DD.

If you or your DH travel frequently for work, how do you handle home life? How do you handle kids, running a household, and being alone?

TIA

We are moving in 2 weeks and have considered buying a YMCA family membership since there's a YMCA location about 5 min away from our new home.

The annual membership dues are $880/family, which comes out to about $73/month, which doesn't sound too bad. I am just trying to figure out whether it is really worth the $$ for us since we will only be able to use it as a family once a week (Sundays), plus - I may be able to go another 2 nights/week for kickboxing/Zumba classes. On Sundays we'd go together with DH and DS - pool, classes, playroom, etc.

Does anyone belong to a YMCA? Any opinions/suggestions? We don't know anyone IRL who is a member of one... Thanks!
