View Full Version : Clothes for newborn?
I know this is a reallllly basic question. Thank you for humoring me. :)
I am due mid-December. I've been looking around for t-shirts for the baby to wear until the umbilical cord stump falls off. The ones I see in packages by Carter and Gerber just seem so thin and not comfy. And I can't find much else!
Am I over-reacting? Should I just get the Carter/Gerber packages? Is it ok for him to just wear a gown -- doesn't seem like it would be tight on his belly that way?
I'm just thinking it's going to be COLD and I don't want him to get chilled. What did the rest of you do?
Thanks in advance. :)

FWIW, I put my child directly in onesies and sleepers when he was born and his umbilical cord stump didn't fall off for 2 weeks.
I never heard anything about newborns only wearing t-shirts, so I didn't give it a second thought.

We just used onesies. They didn't bother his stump at all. As far as them being thin, I've never just left him in just a onesie and he was born in August. I always keep him in a sleeper (or a cute outfit if we go out) and sometimes gowns at night in the beginning, although he hated those suckers (hard to pull over the head and shoulders). I love Gerber onesies. The Circo brand from Target are a bit thicker and nice as well. Don't buy any The First Years onesies-you have to literally pry the snaps apart-total PITA.

The kimono style shirts are good, you could layer one under a gown if you want something a little warmer. My son wore gowns a good bit the first week or so home, but I soon switched to those one-piece snap footie outfits with a shirt under it. (He was a Jan baby so I was concerned about him being warm enough at first.)
Honestly, though, one good layer of cotton outfit should be fine, then swaddle them in a cotton receiving blanket and keep them close (I had a pouch sling that was a lifesaver) -- newborns love that, and being near you will keep his body temp regulated too. :)

You could also forego the onesies at first and use side-snap t-shirts. Carter's definitely makes them and Gerber may as well. I've always preferred Carter's brand b/c they feel softer although Gerber does have a new line of onesies that's more similar to the Carter's feel.
My DD's stump took 4 weeks to fall off and I did not put her in fitted onesies at that time (it was August). I've been wondering the same thing as you though since I feel like w/a December baby, they need the t-shirt, kwim?

I used the side snap t-shirts the first couple of weeks, it just seemed so much easier to get to his diaper that way, and god knows I was changing diapers constantly in the beginning! When his stump fell off we started using onesies.... but from the beginning I did put him in the sleeping gowns, etc.
With the stump, the important thing is to just fold the diaper under it so it doesn't irritate it, otherwise I think onesies, etc. are just fine.
Good Luck.
This is great to know -- thanks everybody! I thought you couldn't use onesies until the stump fell off. I'm thinking I'll just get some of the Carter's tees, and put them on under gowns/sleepers/whatever just to get a little more warmth.
Thanks! :)

I didn't like the side snap tees (the snap area felt rough to me), but did like the little gerber tees. I thought they were easier to deal with than onesies. I put my DD in a tee and then usually a one-piece outfit, with socks and a hat. She was born in early Dec. and that always seemed to be warm enough.

I may be the strange one here, but I HATE little t-shirts, either side snap or whatever. All they did was end up around his neck... with both my kiddos!
I used onesies from the getgo and it never seemed to bother him.

Big old DITTO here. I despise the t-shirts especially under other clothes - it will be up under their armpits in 2 seconds - I even brought my own onesies to the hospital this time to avoid having DD wear the hospital shirt.
With the stump, you just want to make sure that nothing is rubbing right on it (like pants) - a onesie is fine because it will be loose. I also like onesies because they help keep the diaper on right - my DD had such a little butt that even the smallest diaper was halfway down her little crack in a minute:)

I bought the kimono-style snap tees and had some basic tees....and never used them! They rode up and seemed to annoy DS more than anything else.
We ended up just dressing him in the most basic, 100% cotton onesies, pants, socks & hats for the first month. The onesies didn't bother the stub at all. As my Ped said, it looks much worse than it feels!

We had onesies that DD would wear during the first two weeks. She also wore some other cute outfits for when we went out or we had visitors. The only thing we did was make sure that the diaper was folded down so it wasn't on top of the belly button until after her stump fell off.

Onesies all the way. I am weird about clothes that bunch up on babies. It drives me crazy for some reason. Both my girls wore onesies under their clothes during the cool/cold weather. Helena even does now and she's almost 2. I hate when you don't put a onesie on them and a pair of pants and separate shirt and the pants get up under the top of the diaper and then the belly is all exposed. It's my thing. this drives me crazy!

I used Onesies with both of mine until I couldn't get them in their sizes anymore. I despise the T shirts--ITA that all they do is ride up.

When we were at home, I just adjusted the temperature of the house so she would be comfortable with skin-to-skin in a diaper and under a blanket. When we went out, I put a onesie, socks and hat on her and would carry a blanket in case she seemed chilly. Of course, this was during warm temperatures in October in Texas. In your case, knowing the temperatures where you are...I'd sugest a onesie, socks, hat, blanket and a bundle me over the carrier if you are leaving the house.
The downside of her spending most of her days skin-to-skin on my chest is that that became the only place she wanted to sleep for the first 2 weeks. :p
