my dd has her first fever (104 yesterday, currently at 102). she has absolutely no signs of illness though. she's playing and eating as she usually does. what other things cause a fever besides a cold/the flu. she has had some stinky pee lately, so i'm worried she may have a uti, but i've heard that they're not very common in baby girls (although i think they would). any ideas?

Sounds exactly like what my son had last week - fever lasting four days (always higher in the evening), practically no other symptoms. Excessively clingy. We just chalked it up to an unknown virus. Honestly, there are so many viruses that can cause fevers in kids, unless there are other symptoms or it goes on for longer than a few days, it's probably not worth worrying about.

It might be roseola, which has no symptoms other than a high fever and a rash that appears after the fever is gone.

My son has the same thing today! His fever is between 102 and 103, but he says he feels fine. He put himself to bed early last night, but other than that... I was starting to stress (you'd think after almost 3 years I'd be a bit more mellow), but feel better seeing other moms dealing with the same thing.

Yeah, my DD had this last month. We ended up spending 5 hours in the ER because we didn't know what was wrong. Then, the next day the rash appeared and we knew. I read somewhere that in many cases the rash never develops, and it is suspected that roseloa is a very common cause of first fevers in babies.

When we went to the ER, UTI was one of the things they checked for (luckily she peed in the bag so we didn't have to have her catheterized).

yeah, maybe it's roseola. i've heard of a lot of kids having it lately.

Yep, I was thinking roseola, too. It's been going around. My DD was exposed last month, but thankfully didn't develop it.

2 weeks ago, DD had a SLOW moving cold that started with just a fever for the first 36 hours (102.3). had me perplexed. then a few days later with a low grade fever still lingering, she complained of a scratchy throat. Then she gave it to me and i had a scratchy throat which always means a cold for me so i was hoping that was all it would be for her.. sure enough, 2 days later that DD woke up with a mild cough and a stuffy nose.

A fever could also be an indicator of hand foot & mouth disease. when i was teaching, many of the kids would get a very mild case and a high fever was the big tip off at first. DD's friend got it this summer---his mom took him to the dr. because of his random high fever and it turned out that he had the blisters in his throat and that's the only place he got them.

also, on the contrary, i thought UTI's WERE common in baby and toddler girls. I remember DD's ped giving the schpeel about wiping them from top to bottom during diaper changes to prevent them...

My DD just got over a UTI and my doctor told me they are very common in infant girls. Her pee was stinky as well. Unfortunatley, they won't check until she's had the fever a few days.

Hope she feels better soon!
