My poor baby has his second ear infection in a month. He just finished up the 1st round of antibiotics last week and we were back at the doctors yesterday. They gave him another antibiotic and it seems to be really rough on his stomach. So much that he pucks it up with 5-10 minutes of giving it to him. I remember reading some where that yogurt can help this. I looked it up and this is what I found..

It's good to eat yogurt while taking antibiotics. The yogurt will minimize the effects of the antibiotic on the friendly bacteria in the intestines.

However, I also read that yogurt is usually started somewhere around 8 months and my little guy is only 6 months. I have a call into the doctor, but I was wondering if anyone else ever gave yogurt to your infant while taking antibiotics? Did it help? How old were they when you started the yogurt?

Just a side note we just started solids and he HATES ceral, but we have been eating sweet potatoes for almost a week.

I would call your ped. I would explain the situation to them. They may be able to prescribe a different antibiotic that is easier on your child's stomach.

My son never threw up his antibiotic, but it did give him diarreah and a bad diaper rash which was yeast. It cleared up with some lotrimin (with the ped's ok). He's been on antibitotics 3 times and this last time I mentioned the diaper rash was especially bad the 2nd time, so the dr reconsidered what antibiotic he was going to use and this time my son had hardly any side effects.

Oh, we started yogurt at 8 months.

Thanks!

I do have a call into the doctor so we shall see.

He was already on amoxicillin and that was fine. Now he is on amoxicillin with clavulanate, and I hear the next drug in line (forget the name) is even worst for the stomach. So I'm not sure if they can give him something that is easier on his little belly! I just feel so bad for him. I really wish this Dr. would call me back!

Are you BF? If so, you should eat a lot of yogurt and take acidopholus. I probally would be comfortable w/ giving my DD probiotics at that age (acidopholus). You can get acidopholus at your health food store or GNC.

When you get your yogurt, make sure it has live active cultures in it - I know Stonyfield contains them.

The yogurt is really better for combatting things like yeast, which can thrive in the environment produced by taking antibiotics.

I would personally be afraid that the unfamiliar and hard to digest cow's milk in his stomach, on top of the antibiotic, would make for one sick and unhappy baby.

I hope that your dr. gets back to you soon! :)
