Japan??

My DH has to be in Japan for 3 weeks in February. He is going to be around the Tokyo area and is looking for some things to do on the weekends. He is in contact with someone from his company but also likes to hear things first hand from people that have already been there. Also, he is planning on skiing so if anyone has some inside info on the best mountains around there we would love that info especially.

I lived in Japan for 3 years, though not in Tokyo, so I can give some general Japan tips if you need any though I'm not so good with Tokyo specific stuff. For skiing, I would recommend Nagano prefecture. It's where the 1998 olympics were held. Specifically, the village of Hakuba is where you'll find many ski slopes. The one that I have skiied at is called Happone. I stayed at a pension there called Penke Panke, which was pretty much right next to the slopes. It's a budget accomodation and nothing fancy, but near everything and really nice owners. They also rent equipment. Hakuba is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on the shinkansen (bullet train) or about 3.5 hours if you take a limited express train. There are also a number of ski resorts in Niigata prefecture. The town of Yuzawa is pretty famous for skiing, though I've not been there myself. You can get there in about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on the shinkansen as well. If you have any questions, let me know.
