I have a 2000 Jetta (Hector) that I love love love. Hector has, however, had his share of issues and problems, and today, on the way to work, he just stalled out at a red light. Hector is an automatic, and that shouldn't have happened. I've been away for two weeks, and the "check engine" light has been on, but it's not blinking, and I was planning on taking him in for service this weekend. Now I'm kind of scared to drive him home on the highway, and I'm worried about how much this problem is going to cost me. Has anyone had this happen before? If so, what was the problem, how long did it take to fix, and how much cash outlay am I looking at?

I have a Jetta, DH has a Jetta and BIL has a Jetta. All are 2003 models and to my knowledge none of us has ever had this problem. Have you checked your fluids? The best thing I can recommend is calling a dealership and asking the service department about it.
Sorry I can't be of more help!

My '02 Jetta does that when I've been neglectful of his oil change and fluids refill.
Which reminds me, I really need to make an appointment to do just that! And get a signal bulb replaced.

Thanks for the responses, ladies. I just had the oil changed and all the fluids refilled last week -- as well as a new oil pan put in. So it's not that...I wonder if it has something to do with the alternator...I hope not.

I'm pretty sure (but could be wrong) that the mechanics may have forgotten to "reset" your car when they did the fluid/oil change. The boy is a mechanic and lots of new cars have to be "reset" so the warning lights (like the check engine light) doesn't come on. Ususally it's something really strange like - turn the key to accessories for 2 second, turn it off, pump the brake twice and then turn the accessories back on again. Call your dealer, they may be able to help. :)

If it stalled while hot, sounds like it could be the Alternator.

A woman I used to work with had this problem with a Volkswagon back in the 90's. Not sure of the exact year though. She would be driving on the highway doing 50 and kerplunk. This happened time and time again. They never could find what it was. She ended up suing them using the lemon law and won.
Sorry I don't have any advice for you, hopefully your problem isn't the same and they can fix it. Good luck!

Do you still have your owner's manual? I've called for roadside assistance for another issue with my Jetta (couldn't get it out of park  ) and they gave me instructions on how to fix it until I could get to the dealer. They're very helpful and it's free.
