Hello--

the thread on curb appeal reminded me we need to re-landscape the front of our house...my husband wants to do it himself but I wondered if we could start now?

We live on the eastcoast where it gets very cold...is there a season for planting trees?

DH (the arborist) says you don't want to plant this time of the year if you're in an area that gets snow (and frost). Wait until spring.

You also have the option of planting in the early fall, after the heat of the summer but far enough away from the freezing temperatures, but considering where you live it is definitely too late in the season to be planting trees.

Thanks! OK...but could you guys tell me perhaps when 'Spring' is for these purposes? Is it the official date of Spring or when the snow melts or ??????

Thanks!

It depends on where you live. I'm in Ohio and the general rule of thumb here is to plant veggies & flowers around Mother's Day. Trees you may be able to plant a bit earlier, however you would want to ask at a nursery in your area to get their recommendations.

I go to a plant sale every year that is in early May, however I've planted stuff before then. You just need to be aware of possible frost and freezing temperatures.

Yup. We still get snow in May, occasionally. So unless its an awfully hardy plant, we don't plant tender stuff until June 1st. You just have to know your climate, know when the ground unfreezes, etc.
