Last week, Wednesday, we took our cocker spaniel, Lacey, to get groomed. I noticed that the groomer nicked her tail and was upset, but I thought there was no need to call and get mad at someone. Well, she was licking it and I thought it was just to clean the tail, but then I noticed scabs and an open wound all around her booty and tee tee area. Last night I noticed that it had spread to the right side of her face.

I took her to her regular vet this morning and he told me she has a staph infection and it is probably from getting nicked at the groomer. I had to spend $130.00 at the Vet today. My question is this, should I call the groomer and request that she pay the vet bill from today or just drop it and look for another groomer.

I am really upset because this is the same groomer that has been taking care of her since her first hair cut. Any suggestions - thanks in advance.

I am surprised that you had to pay $130 for a visit to the vet for a staph infection. Last week I took one of our foster dogs to the vet b/c he has been scratching his elbows a lot & made them bleed. He had a staff infection... he got a shot of antibiotics w/ steroids, & then 7 days worth of antibiotics to continue to treat. Our vet bill was $50.

Out of curiosity, what did your vet do for your dog?

As far as the situation, I might call & talk to the groomer or the groomer's supervisor & let them know what happened. See if they offer a refund or something. If not, I'd stop using them.

Cost depends on the diagnostics performed, the size of the dog, which antibiotic was used and the length of treatment. I treat skin infections for a minimum of 10 days, often 14-21 or longer, and a $130 bill is not uncommon. The office visit alone in our area for almost all the clinics is $30.

That being said, talk to the grooming manager. They may want a written statement from the vet.

It cost me just about that much last year when my dog got nicked by some other dog up at the dog park.

He came home with an open cut -- somebody's dog probably did it when they were horsing around with the rest of the dogs; several of them were there that day.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back. The vet gave her a steroid shot, antibiotic for three weeks, antibiotic spray and shampoo. I called the groomer and they told me that they would be willing to give her free medicated dips, which was pointless since I already had the medicine. Needless to say, I will not be using that groomer again.

Thanks for all of your input!

Cindy :)
