View Full Version : Late Crawlers---when did they walk?

This is just a very unscientific poll because I'm curious...

If your child was a late crawler, when did they start walking? My DD started crawling at 11 months, and I'm just wondering if she might be walking when we go on our next vacation (she'll be about 17 months)

Thanks!

I can't really answer. DS started crawling around 10.5 months, and isn't walking yet (he's 14 months). At 12 months he was pronounced having a major motor delay, and then he hadn't learned to sit from lying or pull up yet. He just learned those 2 in the last 2 weeks.

My DS (now 16 months) was cruising and just taking his first steps when he decided that he would crawl. That was at about 12-13 months. He has always been much better at walking than crawling.
Is your DD cruising yet? It seemed to happen very quickly after that.

This may be a dumb question, but what exactly is cruising? How is it different from crawling?

Cruising- when they use something like the sofa or the wall to prop themselves up when they walk. Alexander would go back and forth from one end of the sofa to the other. Then he started to walk between the sofa and his activity table. There was a small gap between the sofa and the activity table - maybe a foot.

Okay, that's kind of what I thought. Elliot is nowhere near cruising. She can pull herself up onto her knees, and she can stand up for awhile if I help her get onto her feet. But she's not attemped to take any steps at all.

My DS didn't crawl until he was 10 months and started walking when he was 14 months. He took his time teething too. He's 21 months now and there are days that I long for the time when I could throw him in the bouncy seat and leave the room for a couple of minutes! ;)

My daughter crawled at around a year, and now, at close to 15 months, she's very close to walking. She definitely "cruises" and pulls up on everything and will walk holding an adult's hand/hands. I'm guessing she'll be walking on her own in the next few weeks. The last couple of weeks she has definitely become more interested in being on her feet rather than crawling.

My oldest literally crawled for the first time @9 1/2 months(she rolled around the house before that) and walked 2dayslater.
My middle was born with a HUGE head and didn't even sit up til he was 10 months old, crawled @ 1 year and walked a 15 mo.
My youngest had a sister who is 7 years older who never put her down long enough to crawl. She walked @ about 13 mo.

My 16 month old STILL doesn't crawl - since she was about 11 months she got around by scooting on her butt. Then she pulled herself to stand, then she cruised, then she walked (just a few weeks ago) . Still no crawling!!

She still has not sat herself up from lying down - and she can "military crawl' on her tummy - but she hates her knees and being on all fours. When she wasn't doing much at a year my ped sent us to a neurologist - a few visits to the neuro and a metabolic specialist later, we're all clear... no medical problems.

I was a late crawler and walker too, so I guess that's partly where it comes from?

DS Noah didn't crawl until 13 months.......and he started walking at 17.5 months. From what I hear, there is sometimes about a 4 month interval between the time they crawl and when they walk. It was true for us, but I know it varies. I really thought Noah wouldn't ever crawl or walk. I was so worried, but he walked in his good ole time. :)

Maybe there's something about the name Noah. ;) My Noah's 16 months now. Started crawling at 10.5 months, and still isn't walking. We just got a referral to see if we qualify for early intervention (free therapy in our home! Nice!) so hopefully we'll get somewhere soon.

I understand that many babies don't crawl nowadays because of the "Back to Sleep" campaign (I think I read this somewhere); that crawling is not really considered a "milestone" for babies, either, because so many of them don't do it - or do some sort of other version of it, like scooting, as someone said.

That said, I'm interested in this because DD hasn't started crawling yet, either, though she's only 7.5 months (which seems late to me already, though), and she also can't pull up into a sitting position from laying on her back - which really does worry me. However, she is going crazy about walking these days - wants to stand, "finger-walk" (walk holding my fingers; I'd never heard that term before until a couple of weeks ago), and is even letting go of my hands sometimes (which I don't really let yet; I'm too scared). So I think she's going to skip crawling and go straight to walking. My friend's baby did the same and started walking at 9.5 months!!! I'm VERY scared of mobility - as someone said, I can already foresee me longing for the days when I could put her in her bouncy/exersaucer and leave the room. I can still get away with that a little, but the "finger-walking" becomes very tiresome. I'm hoping she'll start cruising soon.

I've just been thinking about this! Elliott crawled a few weeks before his first birthday. He was 8 weeks early, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. He's been cruising for what seems like forever now, with no real interest in walking or standing on his own. He's now a little over 15 months, about 13 and a half months adjusted.

I'm a little worried about it, to be honest, even though I know there's nothing really to worry about.

Practically speaking, I'd like him to walk so we can go places like the park, without me having to closely inspect the ground!

I don't think it's anything to worry about, especially with his adjusted age. Noah's cruising but not walking now, but he's 16 months, and wasn't a preemie. I'm worried, and we have a consult with early intervention soon. I'm hoping he'll qualify.

If you're really worried, you could check into early intervention in your area. It's usually free. If they decide he's got enough of a delay to qualify, you'll get therapy. Or, they could just reassure you that it's nothing to worry about.

Just to update b/c I last posted in Aug. 05 when DD was 7.5 months. She crawled for maybe a week at 10 months, had been cruising and standing for a while, started walking at 11.5 months (probably 100% by 12.5-13 months) and never looked back. Now she climbs like a monkey and is on the go ALL the time.

DD crawled at 11 months and walked at 16 months.

DD is now 23 months. She army crawled beginning around 10-11 months (IIRC, seems like ages ago). She began pulling up on furniture and cruising around 12.5-13 months. She took her first wobbly steps around 15.5 months and was walking "full-time" by 16.5/17 months.

We had early intervention services (not specifically for non-walking but another issue early on) and they gave me a lot of tips to help encourage her walking. I can pull out the sheets and post them here if anyone is interested.

alienhost, would you post them, please?

I know it's perfectly normal for DD2 to not be anywhere near crawling yet at almost 9mo (and I'm getting to where I'm not actually "worried" anymore), but because DS and DD1 crawled at 6m and 7m and walked at 9m and 10m I just want to make sure I'm presenting DD2 with all the opportunities she needs.

She's rolling like crazy, though. Yesterday she rolled from the den all the way to the patio doors in the breeakfast nook (through a doorway and made 2 "turns"). :)

DD crawled at 10 months, took first steps at 16 months, walked confidently at 17 months. Her Ped was never concerned. Now at almost 2.5 yo she runs like Phoebe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_0Ta_DIWuU), but she might get that from me. :p :)

DS crawled at 9 months and walked at 10 months. I think the only reason he crawled was to get to the couch to pull himself up so he could walk.

Sophia I have more suggestions from the PT to try and encourge crawling. I don't have time to type them up right now but will try to do it in the next few days if you'd like to see them.

That would be awesome, thanks!

I do put toys several feet away to get her to move towards them, but right now she just rolls to them. :) And I got her that Chase n Crawl Duckies (http://www.hasbro.com/playskool/letsplaytogether/default.cfm?page=tip&toy=duckies) rolling toy from Playskool.
