Does your Hound Dog / Hound Mix smell like fritos?

Mine does! No matter how much he is bathed, or brushed, and no matter
which shampoo we try, Saint always smells of old corn chips. :rolleyes:
We've even switched his food to see if that was it...no go. DH says that
when he's older he may end up smelling like pipe tobacco since he's houndy.

#1: Is this common?

#2: Any smelly dog tips?

We have a coon hound and while she doesn't smell like Frito's, she definitely has a different "dog smell" then our other dog or any other dog I've ever had for that matter. Some old hunter guy told me it was something to do with their skin but I don't know if that is true or not. I spray her with doggy perfume in between baths to help keep her smelling fresh ;)

no not at all! ari is a ridgie/lab mix and while he does sometimes get smelly, i have never noticed a frito odor.

My poodle gets a corn chip odor when he's filthy dirty, but it goes away when he's bathed. It may be an individual dog thing. DH calls him the Corn Chip when he needs a bath.

Are you talking about the paws in particular? Because I do have a hound (dachshund) whose paws smell like Fritos, but I also noticed the same thing on my doberman puppy way back in 1980. My brother and I were freaking out about it and taking turns sniffing. ;) I've also noticed the smell of Fritos on the paws of other dog breeds.

My basset hound gets a stinky smell that is hard to describe. Not really like corn chips that I've noticed though! I can't even think of WHAT he smells like, but when the odor surfaces, you sure can tell.

My beagle usually smells like a stinky fish when she's really dirty (as do most dogs I've encountered). Now I think I'll go outside and see of I detect a Frito odor- I'm intrigued. What would make their paws smell that way?

For what it's worth, my dog gets smelly, but usually just ucky dog smell or whatever she just ate last.

Nope, no suggestions other than some good-smelling bath soap.

That's so weird, I grew up with hounds, and never noticed anything like that. Maybe I just wasn't sniffing their paws! ;) If it's a corn smell, could it be from a diet with a lot of corn in it??

We have a Basset Hound and he does smell more "musty" than our other non-hound dog. However, I haven't noticed the Frito smell.... just musty. :D

Scooter - could it be from a diet with a lot of corn in it I guess that could be it. we've had him on different foods, but havent really checked the actual % of corn content... Just checked it out. We feed him Nutro Max Mini Chunk as he prefers a smaller size of food. The top ingredients are: Chicken Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Whole Wheat, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Rice, Lamb Meal... So it seems pretty far down on the list and they advertize that they use no ground yellow corn, so...dunno <shrug>

I will be really weird, here, and say I don't mind the corn chip smell all that much. It's kind of gross, but I still think it's rather mild compared to true out-and-out doggy-dog odor.

I find this so funny, because I have a pitt bull mixed pup that also smells like fritos! It's only her head that smells though. I only notice it when I am giving her kisses on the head, so it's not that powerful of a smell.

I'm glad to know my dog isn't the only freak out there :D

When Elvis' feet are stinky dirty, they don't smell like corn chips or popcorn. They smell worse than that; not quite sure how to describe what it smells like.

My DH always tells our beagle that he smells like corn chips! I just read him the first post and we both laughed. Our basset hound on the other hand just plain stinks. I think the beagle is usually relatively clean. I never thought about other dogs smelling like corn chips. Very funny! I guess there are worse things to smell like.

One of the dogs I grew up with had paws that smelled like Fritos. She was a mutt, probably a Springer Spaniel/Beagle mix. This past summer when my parents knew she had to be put down and I knew it was the last time I would see her, I specifically sniffed her paws to try to burn the scent into my memory. *sniff* I did not know that this was as common a thing as it appears to be...so there's hope of having a dog in the future that reminds me of Britty. Kind of a weird feeling to hope that I have a dog whose feet smell like a salty snack. ;)

This thread is too funny. I think some dogs just have odd smells. My dog smelled like mushrooms for the longest time...just his head/neck though, well actually I wasn't really wanting to smell the rest of his body...so I'll say it was just his head/neck.

All I can say is that there are much worse things for a dog to smell like!

Our beagle has Frito-Feet!

On a related note, our Beagle-Boston mix peed in his cage right after he got fixed so we weren't allowed to bathe him. Now, HE had an odor. DH called him "Urinal Cake".

Absolutely! My bassets have also smelled like fritos. Almost everyone who has one says so. They mostly smell like that when they are warm, such as when they first wake up from sleeping. Its a hound thing! Bassets rock!

We have a Golden Retriever, not a Hound dog, but I think her paws smell like popcorn. In fact, we often call her "Popcorn Paws." It isn't a stinky smell in my opinion, though...I actually rather like it, LOL. It's a comforting smell somehow.

That's IT!! I knew Charlie smelled 'different' than any other dog I have ever had, just couldn't put my finger on it. He is a Hound/Lab mix (doesn't every mix have 'lab' in it??)

OMG this is soo hilarious!!! Everyone thinks we're crazy when we tell them our beagle, Checker, smells like Fritos!! It's only his paws, and you have to be close to him to smell it, though. I never thought anyone else experienced this!!!It was so funny to us that now my pup's "middle name" is Frito and he answers to it! You know how Flava Flav kinda yells his name?? When we yell FRIIIITO LAAAAAAAY-my pup comes running!!!:D
