View Full Version : Do you freak out if your ring gets scratched?

My ring is pretty scratched on the backside...and I honestly don't really care. It's a ring, it's going to get scratched, and it was scratched the first week I got it. I have a gf who just got engaged, and she has a solitaire on a *very* thin platinum band. It has a teeny tiny scratch and she's all freaking out about it. Mind you it *is* a Tiffany's ring, so she's pretty protective of it...but still...it's not like people survery the back of your ring everyday.
I've heard of gals going to get their rings fixed everytime it gets a ding, and I just think it's so funny. I didn't even bother getting mine fixed for the wedding...meh...it looks "lived in" to me.

I did not care - and my ring was scratched up pretty quickly. For some reason your post reminded me of Swatch guards! I can visualize one for the rings!

Sarah, I'm the same way.

My ring has a few marks that are not an issue to me right now. I will however be getting it cleaned before the wedding, as the platinum on my e-ring has started to dull ( like it naturally will)m but my wedding ring in all shinny, and I think it will both me since there is so much metal showing on my e-ring. If I had a thinner band maybe not, but it is 6mm so it is noticable.

I'm with you. It's part of life. I've been married 7 years and my ring has a sort of patina that if you look closely is a fine web of scratches from wearing it 24/7 for all this time. IMO, it only makes it more valuable to me.

Are we talking actual scratches (I'm imagining something that you could feel if you ran your fingernail over it) as opposed to a patina?
I don't mind the patina at all.
Platinum is particularly prone to patina, but unlike gold, in which the metal actually gets worn away, in platinum it gets redistributed.

I hadn't even considered the scratches on my e-ring until I saw this post. So, now I am leaning over my desk holding my hand under my lamp to examine my ring, and guess what...it has some scratches and I don't care! I mostly admire the solitare diamond and not the setting anyway. Maybe if I had a more intricate setting with lots of detail work I would care about scratches.

I think a "scratched" ring shows a ring that is worn in pride and love, every day. I think I'd be more worried if I wore a ring that didn't have any scratches.

Not only is the back of my ring scratched, it's dented in a couple of places - most recently from a spill on the sidewalk outside my building. I'd love to get it reshaped and polished someday, but for now it's fine.

When I first got mine I was a freak about it and would get it buffed but now I don't worry. It shows I have been married for a while!

I worried about it at first but quickly learned that it was going to get scratched and there's nothing I could do about it (short of not using my hands). Now I don't even notice.
I don't worry about it at all. I do take my rings to my jeweler every six months or so to get the setting checked and they polish them then. But I would never take it in solely because of a scratch or ding.
My DH lost his original wedding band. He was crushed when he got a new one because it was all shiny and perfect. He liked that his previous one was scuffed and lived in. Now he feels like he has to start over.

Those are our wedding rings. Ours are also from Tiffany's. Mine is all scratched up from the bottom now and got that way pretty quick. I tried to be careful but no matter what I knew it was going to get that way. I even have a big one on the side. And my husband's ...omg! well he works on a printing press so his is ALL banged up...but *smiles*...he doesn't mind because he says they now have "character." ;) (We've only had ours for 4 months)

No, I don't notice if my ring gets scratched, I don't believe I ever did. I have the setting checked regularly, but I don't bother w/ the free cleaning. I wear it in the shower, that's clean enough. ;)
Your friend is in for a rude awakening, though, if she is freaking out over 1 mark. My friend who has a platinum setting, her ring is completely dull and scratched like crazy, and she doesn't even wear it all the time. It's been like that since a couple of months after she got it - it got scratched up easily/quickly. It used to drive her crazy, but now she has given up stressing.

I figure --we're going to wear these metal bands for hopefully the rest of our years... My band is titanium--and I did not want an engagement ring. I guess we could get them buffed at some point in the future --but the symbolism is more important to me than a shiny piece of metal... Just my not so humble opinion...

My ring is white gold, so if I was going to worry about scratches I think I'd have to keep it in the safe under the bed. I do sometimes worry about bending the prongs, but that's because I don't want the diamond to fall out.

Not really. I wear my ring all.the.time, so it's bound to get scratched. I really only take it off to put lotion on my hands or if I'm doing something really messy like digging in dirt or making cookies or something.
My ring is white gold too, so it does scratch pretty easily. Sometimes it bothers me when it gets a lot of scratches, but every 6 months I take it to the jewelry store for a check-up & cleaning, & every other time (so far, anyway) I've had them redo the rhodium plating on it to make it all nice & shiny & scratch-free again. :D I had them do this right before our wedding last year & then I didn't wear it from the day I got it back until our actual wedding day, just so it would look as perfect as possible on our big day. ;)

I remember freaking out at the very first scratch but that was because it was a bad one! (I accidently banged it hard against a metal filing cabinet) I got it buffed out and after that the little scratches didn't bother me.

Not really. I did freak out when I bent one of the prongs about 2 weeks after I got engaged, however. Other than that, I know that having platinum means my rings will get a patina and scratches.

I like the lived-in look. Tiny dings and scratches don't bother me.

Scratches don't bother me at all. Now, when I snagged my ring on a thread and bent the (badly done) prong a month after I got the ring...yeah, that upset me. But I had the prongs redone and have had no trouble since.

My ring goes through a lot of wear and tear. I took it the the jewelry store before the wedding and that made it look like brand new again. I usually try to take it once every couple of weeks to have them clean, and I will probably have them restore it (make it shiny) every couple of years. It is white gold and gets very dull.
