Thank you DiscoDiva! I was thinking that is the way it is done but I wasn't 100% sure. And thanks for the printing tips. :)

Thanks for the printing tip, DiscoDiva. I have reprinted the same vellum papers four times now because I keep smearing them. But I always print them on regular. I hope to make some progress in the next couple of months and post some layouts online.

Journaling I enjoy the personal touch but like many am not too fond on my own handwritting. I compomise in doing my journaling on the computer and printing it out. However, I use a font, which is made from my personal handwritting. Best of both worlds.

Where do you get a font made from personal handwritting? That sounds like a great idea!

A beginner question

-Do you regularly use an eyelet setter and eyelets or brads in your design? I was thinking about purchasing some of these to dress them up the pages a bit.

Liz~ Do you regularly use an eyelet setter and eyelets or brads in your design? I was thinking about purchasing some of these to dress them up the pages a bit. - I have to say I love my eyelet setter... (Silent Setter), It works awesomely... there so many different kinds of eyelets, I don't think I could ever run out... Loves them...

Thanks for the printing tip, DiscoDiva. I printed my weddign shower invites on vellum and couldn't figure out why the ink wouldn't dry... Great tip.

Also I have the Fiskars Cutting Trimmer and Love it.. It does a great job and have only had to buy a new blade last month adn I've been using it for 2.5 years.

Jen~ For organization, I have a cropping tote, a Cropper Hopper Photo storage, for pictures, Cropper Hopper embellishment case and tons of "fishing cases" to sort out eyelets (by color) and brads, embelishments. I also have the paper sorter for 12x12 paper and a large plastic container to sort out stickers and "jolees" by theme or seasons.

I just bought this tool a few weeks ago, and it has made me fall in love with eyelets and snaps all over again:

Cropodile (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2061004486862778848&q=We+R+Memory+Keepers) (the link takes you to a video - I'm still looking for a picture of it online).

It's completely silent, requires very little hand strength, and will punch through all sorts of stuff, right up to the thickest, sturdiest cardstocks. One of the best scrapping investments I've made this year. :)

ETA: links to the retailer's website (I was lucky enough to purchase mine locally when they got in a small shipment - I drove straight to the store when I heard they had them!): We R Memory Keepers (http://www.shopwer.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={08898EVEREST0BB-D0CF-4EF4-B05B-751CE7BC3C96}&ic=70907%2D7&eq=&Tp=)

I do not and will not use eyelts, brads, buttons, or any other hard, 3-D embellishment, as I'm afraid it will make dents in the photos on the opposite page or harm the album. I will, however, use soft, thin embellishments like ribbon or string.

Isn't there a silent eyelet setter that when you push down on it it twists to punch a hole and set the eyelet? I like the one snowzilla posted but was hoping to buy a setter at Michael's (40% off coupon baby! Yes I'm a bargain shopper)

Good point DD, I hadn't thought about that. Have you (or anyone else for that matter) had that happen to you?

ETA - Oops, I see the one E'sprincess posted is the one I was thinking of. And since I took back a question, I need to ask another :D Are eyelets interchangeable or do I have to by silent setter eyelets if I have a ss setter (say that 3 times fast!) and cropadile eyelets for a cropadile setter.

Yes - the ProvoCraft Silent Setter. I have it. I don't recommend it though. It'll only set "soft" metal eyelets, and will not do MM eyelets. I'm going to upgrade as soon as I've got the spare cash...

I could see having that opinion if I was looking at scrapbooking from a purely archival point of view; however, I look at it as an opportunity to unleash my creativity on a piece of paper (or rather, cardstock). I don't hold back when it comes to the myriad of embellishments that are out there - it's too much fun, and my right-thinking brain wouldn't have it any other way!

I do keep original photos in separate albums, so I don't have to worry about those being affected or aging prematurely. (And I backup my digital photos to CDs, and periodically, those CDs to DVD - am I paranoid, or what?)

Ok, I need your opinion. I made a page for my dd's birth and then realized that I don't have much space left to put the day and possibly time when she was born. Here's a pic.

The things on the bottom of the envelope are bubble stickers (I promise not to become addcited DD:p ) that say 7 lbs 3oz 20 in. Inside the envelope is the card that was in her bassinet, newspaper clippings, and stuff like that. The two ideas I have would be to do a journaling spot above the envelope saying something like Daytona Bailey A. was brought into this world on October 25, 2005 at 1:12am. My other thought was to write a shortened version of my birth story and make sorta a little booklet out of it using index cards or something like that and then sticking it in the envelope. What do you ladies think? Any other ideas? You guys have helped so much already!

I made it myself a few years back. There are several different font creators out there. Some better than others but once it is done it is definitely worth it. I will also use this font for letters/cards if I don't have enough time to handwrite them all. I figure it is better than a computer font ... yet not as good as a handwritten would have been.

Do you guys remember a while back when I asked you all for help with a title for one of my layouts from my trip to Santorini? This is the last thing I posted about it a while back:I actually ended up taking endymion411's suggestion and I changed the LO a little bit. I took out this picture:

http://images.snapfish.com/3468686%3A3%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E2324%3D849%3D56%3B%3DXRO QDF%3E232354767%3A3%3B5ot1lsi

and am just using the other two pictures which are specifically of doorways. So rather than focusing on the view from our room, I've decided to make the LO about the amazing views you experience when you walk through all the doorways of Santorini.

When it's finished, I'll be sure to post a pic for you guys.

Thanks so much! I knew you all wouldn't let me down. :)

Anyway, I wanted to let you know, I didn't forget about you guys and so here is the layout in which I was having so much trouble thinking of a title for a while ago:

http://images1.snapfish.com/346%3B98782%7Ffp345%3Enu%3D3233%3E758%3E47%3A%3EWS NRCG%3D323377%3B4%3C5666nu0mrj

I'm actually quite pleased with how it turned out and I wanted to thank you all so much for your wonderful suggestions. I'll be posting this LO and the rest of my LOs from this trip on the "Post your Layouts" thread if anyone's interested.

Me too. I store them tip-down, or on their sides, and I've never had one dry out on me. I love my Zig writers.

There is one brand, a cheaper brand from Michael's, but I can't think of the brand name at the moment, but I stopped buying them because the quality was so poor. Sometimes they would write a nice smooth line, other times the ink would "skip" and completely ruin the look of my journaling.

DD - no, it wasn't Le Plume - I've never tried those, but I've seen them there. These pens have a clear body with a tinted lid (in the color of the ink) - they're like a gel writer, and they're so crappy. I have a box of them that I finally gave to my daughter to use for arts and crafts, because I was so tired of ruining my journaling boxes with them. :( If I wasn't sitting here with a sleepy baby on my lap, I'd run downstairs to see what kind they are. :)

I just had to check the brand of mine because I had no clue. I guess I use them a lot less than I thought I did. I don't have the original package they came in because I bought them years ago, but it says Tombo on the pens. They're dual tip and work great.

Carla, I've never had any luck with any gel pens that I've bought.

Hi ladies. I have never posted in this thread before, but have started scrapbooking again b/c I'm done with school! YAY! So I'll be around here more often.

Anyway, when I started scrapbooking I used to hand journal everything. That's mostly what people seemed to be doing "back then." I noticed that many people are now typing their thoughts, as many of you are. I really like it, because there are so mnay fonts to choose from and it's not as messy (messy isn't good on every page - LOL!). So my question is - what software do you guys use for journaling? And, where do you find your fonts? Thanks!

Do any of you do your journaling in Word? I don't have photoshop. :(

Also, how do most of you organize your scrapbooks. I really wanted my books to be chronological, but we're only in June and I've already filled the book to capacity (added 2 sets of sheets already). So I have a new album but was then starting to think that maybe I should just do a scrapbook with our vacations/trips. The only problem with that is we tend to go to Key West a lot so many of the pictures would be similiar. Should I just do the First album Jan-May06 and the second album Jun-Dec06?

I know once I have a baby, I'll do a whole album just for him/her, but in the meantime I gotta figure out how to do it. :D

BethS0103

Jen, I started off using Word, but the reason I began using photoshop was for a few reasons 1) I can actually create a new file and give it the dimensions I need for my journaling. So if I have room for a 4"x4" square in my layout, I can tell photoshop to create that size file for me and then I can just add the text without worrying if it's too big or too small for my layout 2) The other reason I use photoshop over word is the way they use the dropdown menu of their fonts. In Word, everytime you open the dropdown font menu, it goes back to the beginning of the list, which can get really annoying if you're trying out different fonts to see which one works the best. In photoshop, you open the dropdown font menu and it stays with the font you are on rather than going to the beginning of the alphabetical list. 3) Since I create a lot of my titles in Photoshop as well, it just seemed like a natural progression to do my journaling there.

LeslieR

I use Word for my journaling. I either print right on the paper where I want the journaling to go or I trim it and mount it on my page. I've collected a ton of fonts over the years, but when I'm looking for something specific, I use dafont.com.

Jen, are you using post bound albums and that's why they're filling up? I just bought this cool thing on QVC last week that I am hoping will help me to get the most out of the album I have for my son. They're called Snapload Expandable Binders.

Here is the description:
Adding refills to your scrapbook or journal is quick and easy with these flexible-nylon Snapload binders. This conversion kit lets you change a post-bound binder, measuring 5" x 7" to 12" x 15", into a Snapload book that holds up to 300 flat pages. Makes up to five two-post albums and works with all current post-based refill supplies.

I haven't gotten them yet, but I'm hoping this does the trick. I absolutely DO NOT want to have two albums for my son's first year of life. I have two months more to go and it is completely full right now. The cover will not even close all the way. I'll make sure to come back and post a review when I get them.

Rats. The picture won't work. I'm sure if you do a search on QVC, you can find them there and they probably sell them other places, too.:)

I use either Photoshop or Publisher, depending on what I'm doing. I have a collection of fonts from free sites, but I also got a number of useful fonts from two digital scrapbooking programs that were given to me for Christmas. (Other than that, I find the programs completely useless - I feel bad that somebody bought them for me, because they're drastically inferior to using something like Photoshop to do the same job.)

Hey, gals!!! I am in need of some assistance.

Today, we burried a classmate of mine who died while serving in Iraq. He is the first soldier this town has lost since either Vietnam or WWII. Most businesses and some individuals flew their flags at half-mast in remembrance of him. DH and I took pictures of all the flags and signs people put up around town. We are wanting to do an album of the community support he recieved and give it to his family.

What I am needing is layout ideas for these photos. I am looking at doing an 8x8 album, and the photos will be 4x6.

TIA!!!

I'd do a simple cover page saying "In honor of His Name Here". For the inside pages, I think I'd do basic solid color pages, like blue or red, and use minimal accents or red, white and blue. You could also do a final page saying something like, "We will not forget him or the service he performed for our country."

I agree with DiscoDiva - and I wouldnt be afraid to add something that you feel is important too - a poem or quote, anything like that. I think the content is important, not the 'look' of the content (hope that makes sense). Just so its not too busy looking.

Im so sorry for the loss of your friend.

Thank you for the ideas. I'm going to be heading to our scrapbook store today, so hopefully I'll find some appropriate papers. Also, according to their website, they have Marine stickers. I wasn't planning on using many of those, but maybe a star or a flag somewhere. Completely torn as to whether to include a helicopter sticker (if a page calls for it) since that is how he died. Any thoughts there?

Thanks again!

They have stickers, and paper available for all branches of the military. I've seen monochromatic papers with stars that would look great with solid cardstock. I don't know that I would shy away from portraying certain elements of the military, like helicoptors. He was a marine, and I'm sure he was very proud to be a marine. But even if you don't use a sticker like a helicoptor, there are some great stickers available, like the seal and insignia.

DiscoDiva
06-09-2006, 07:25 AM
I don't think I'd use the typical military stickers, like helicopters, guns, and all that stuff. I'd stick to a very basic look, only accented by the colors of the red, white and blue papers. Actually, I don't think I'd use stickers at all.

I agree with DiscoDiva, keep it simple and let the pics speak for themselves. Stickers may "cheapen" the effect.

The main part of the scrapbook is done!! Thank you all so much for ideas. I will try to get pics taken of it to show you.

I did use a few stickers where there were obvious "holes" in layouts. There's only one page I included them on that I now am not crazy about, but overall they worked. I bought the Jolie's Boutique brand, so they were the 3-D marine uniforms. I do still need to do some VERY basic journaling - basically labeling where each flag is located.

I had DH look through it, and he said he was about in tears. He thought it was very moving, so I think that is a good sign.

I did a search and nothing came up in this thread.

Has anyone ordered from Oriental Trading Company's "Fun Expressions" catalog? I keep getting it in the mail and looking through it, and their prices seem pretty good. With shipping prices (depending on total order), I wonder if it's just better to visit my local scrapbooking store. Then again, I can't 'overspend' like I do there from seeing so many cool things that I-HATE-TO-HAVE-NOW. :o

Any experiences?

I have bought scrapbooking stuff from Oriental Trading Co. I bought their tape runners since they seemed a lot cheaper, but they seem to run out faster than the CM tape I was using. I didn't like the paper I bought from them either. It was glossy and a weird texture. I'm not sure if all of their paper is like that, since I only bought 1 pack of a winter themed paper. I did buy some of their solid cardstock which I liked. It wasn't too thick, and was still a nice paper.

I did like ribbons I bought from them, which were reasonably priced. I bought a bunch of other stuff, including organization items, but nothing really wowed me.

The problem is, things may look really good in the catalog, but they are cheap looking when you get them.

By the way, they usually have specials where if you buy a certain amount (usually around $60), you get free shipping.

I buy all my paper from Michaels. They usually have really great sales. In fact, in this weeks flyer the sale is 6 sheets for $1. I have often seen sheets of paper at expensive stores that I have purchased at Michaels for much cheaper!

Just FYI...

I bought a red-eye remover pen from my Creative Memories consultant last week. It's awesome! One of the girls that was at the scrapfest with me used it on her glossy pictures and I used it on my matte pictures and it worked wonderfully. It was very easy to use too. You can't even tell that you used a pen after you're done. If you're looking for one, I would highly recommend the Creative Memories Red Eye Remover Pen.

There's also a pet eye remover pen. It works great too. I've only used it on matte pictures so I don't know how it will work on glossy. If you have a cat or dog and love to take pictures of it, it might be a good $5 investment for you.

I feel like a CM pimp. But I'm so impressed with it, I had to share it with fellow scrapbookers!

Hey ladies,

I just wanted to alert you to a great (AND FREE!) font organizing software I stumbled upon the other day.

I know many of us scrappers are ADDICTED to acquiring new fonts for our scrapbooking. So much so that we can never find the type or kind we want when we're looking for a particular font for a title or journaling.

Well, I just downloaded this software called Font Hit (http://software.fonthit.com/) that lets you organize your fonts in different categories and folders so you can always find the font you want - quickly.

For example, with this software I was able to organize all my fonts in the following categories:

Calligraphy fonts
Decorative fonts
Dingbats
Distressed fonts
Ethnic fonts
Gothic/scary fonts
Journaling fonts
Old English Fonts
Picture/Object fonts
Script fonts
Title fonts
Whimsical fonts

Another great feature about this software is that you can type text at the top of the page and then all of the fonts in that particular category will show up with that text, so if you're looking for a font to title a layout, you could type in the text of the title and see what it looks like in all the different fonts in that category.

It took me about half the day to organize all 800 of my fonts into folders, but once I did, my scrapbooking has become so much easier.

Just wanted to pass this along to anyone else who has too many fonts to manage and wanted an easier way to find the right one for their layouts.

BethS0103

That I'm not sure. I didn't read anything that mentioned a limit on fonts. I have over 800 and it didn't limit that many, but I'm not sure if there's a limit or not.

I don't have that particular font software (I have The Font Thing) but I would imagine they are very similar, and I had over 2000 fonts and it was able to handle it. (Many of my fonts are similar and that is one of the reasons I got this program - I want to weed them out). The only thing is you have to be patient because it takes time to load all those fonts. My plan was to split them into categories and then only load the ones I need at any given time (have them in separate folders). I have done a bit of this and have to confess that I am not liking it too much. Perhaps I just dont have it down pat yet, but I would much rather have ALL my fonts at my beck and call all the time! :p What prompted this was that it took SO long to load up Photoshop, but maybe I will just clean up my fonts, upgrade my puter and show a little more patience. :D

SunnyAB, the free font software I mentioned is more of a categorizing software to use strictly within that application and not in other software programs. So when you put all the fonts in different folders, you're only doing so in that program and it won't show up that way in other programs. So what I do is, if I'm looking for a font to title a layout or for journaling, I go into the font software first, look in a couple different folders, type some sample text (e.g. the title I want to use for the layout or the first sentence of my journaling) and then I decide which font looks best. Once I have that, then I go into Photoshop, find that font, and then type out the text.

I know what you mean BethS0103 - mine does exactly the same thing. (I didnt explain myself very well) I am just VERY impatient and don't want to have to check the font program first :o I know - shame on me! :p I didnt mean I dont like the program though, I really do! Especially the preview of your text - its MUCH faster to scroll through and see the examples in the font program - and especially with the exact wording you want. But I know some people have their fonts divided into categories and will only load the - lets say the calligraphy fonts - when they think they will need them. My problem is that I THINK I know what I want to use, then may change my mind and the new font might be in a different category. So I dont think the program will work for me in that way, but everyone has their preferences I guess, but I find it very valuable in a different way. :D After reading this.. I think the problem is in MY BRAIN programming! ;)

After reading this.. I think the problem is in MY BRAIN programming!LOL! Maybe. :p I know in a way it sounds counterproductive to add an extra step to the process by opening a separate program just to find out what font you want to use, but for me it saves me a good 15 minutes to a half hour of the process because I can be really obsessive when it comes to choosing the right font. If I've got them all in front of me from the "category" I'm looking for, it just makes it so much easier. But that's just me. ;)

Regarding the stapler: aren't you afraid the staples will rust?

question... I just cut DD's hair for the first time this weekend and saved some locks. Can anyone suggest a product that I could store it in and attached it to a scrapbook page. Thanks!!

discodiva.. the staples I am looking at are for scrapbooking. I just assumed that they would be rust free. I may need to look at the box to see what it says.

We put Noah's hair in a clear plastic envelope. I found it in the scrapbooking section of some store, I can't remember which. I think CTMH sells some too.

I put DD's hair in one of the memorabilia pockets (http://www.creativememories.com/MainMenu/Our-products-and-services/Adhesives/Memorabilia-Pockets) by Creative Memories.

The staples I believe she is looking at are the Making Memories staples - they're made specifically for scrapbooking.

Hi Ladies,

quick question - I want to put my daughter's birth story in her scrapbook. I had copied it from my WC journal into ms word. It is 1.5 pages typed I think so I want to put it in a smaller font for her scrapbook. Can anyone recommend a nice font that still looks good small? Thanks!

I have no experience journaling yet which is why I am so clueless now. I must start journaling regularly so I get used to it.

I started a scrapbook while DH was serving in Iraq and I did about 10 pages and they looked great. But he took so many pictures over there and I feel like they are so piled up...I feel very overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Anyone else feel like this or have advice on how to begin?

First of all organize them chronilogically or by topic (mess hall, barricks, goofing around, etc.) That will help you get a feel for how many pages you'll need and how to organize them on a page. It will also give you an idea of how to crop them, if you so choose.

Then, if you have enough room lay out all of your pages at the same time. That way you can mix up the photos and get an overall feel for the book. Plus photos don't get lost in the shuffle, only to be found after you've completed the page they "belonged on". (I can't tell you how many time this has happened to me! :o)

Finally mount the photos, journal, enhance, and you're done!!

I have lots of ideas for my babybooks, but just feel too overwhelmed to begin. I had a goal to have DS's book done before he turned 1 y/o but that has come and gone. I have done one book for my DD who is now 3. I better get a move on.

I need help! I'm looking for a free font to download that looks like baby blocks or the alphabet letters on baby blocks. Any ideas? Thanks!

Here are a couple of sites that have letters in blocks -

http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=baby_blocks

http://www.rogersgifs.com/fontmaster/b.html

Is this what you were looking for? There is also a font that is more three dimensional, but its not free; (I will keep looking for the free version (if there is one) if thats what you wanted though) Good luck.

Thanks. Yes, those are similar to what I'm looking for, but they don't quite look like the fat, rounded letters you usually see on baby blocks. If you see anything else, please let me know!

Here's another option that I hope might work for you. Each block is a 'picture'. It says you can download them, but I could only "save as" then insert into a document as a picture. I didnt try to print though, so Im not sure of the quality.

Thanks for your research SunnyAB! You're not going to believe it, but I figured out what font is used for baby blocks. It's Burlesque. Who would have believed that?! Anyway, I figured out a way to put a border with rounded edges around the Burlesque letters, and it looks perfect!

Oh perfect! I was going to suggest that as the next thing if I couldnt find anything else to word for you, but thought that would be too much trouble for you! :D I'm glad you found something to work for you! :)
