Elenitsa – What age group are you looking for? I have tons of favorite books, but I’m not sure what age bracket you’re targeting? Infant/Toddlers only? Older? Let me know and I’ll give you a list. I’m gonna go home and think about it and write it out tonight.
What a cute idea about it being a shower theme though. I haven’t bought anything for baby yet, but I already have a little bookshelf reserved in his/her room.:)
Sorry to hijack. Will bring you a list soon.:D

Ditto the Curious George, Shel Silverstien and Dr. Seuss
Also Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little (my parents started out reading them to me and eventually I read to them. I read CW probably 15 times between the ages of 4 and 10). I was read to, and read on my own, voraciously as a child, but for the life of me can't remember the names of the books from when I was very small. I do remember liking the Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume books as I got older though.
DDs favorites over the past 2 years (in no particular order):
Runaway Bunny
How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight
Giraffes Can't Dance
Pat the Bunny
Blackberry Mouse
Sandra Boynton books
the Amelia Bedelia series
Shel Silverstien books
she loved lift the flap books when she was younger
and lots more that I can't think of.

Jenn- How about infant / toddler books. Maybe age 5 and younger. The stuff that early memories are made from. PS - hijack away. That is what this thread is for -- collaboration.

Okay, here is a quick list to start that I came up with this morning. Some are for a bit older group. For some reason I am having a difficult time remembering all my favorites from the really young years. I just saw a wonderful book that my niece got for her birthday. I’ll have to find out what book it was…

Amelia Bedelia books
Bernstein Bears books
Little Bear Books
Dr. Seuss - All books, but particularly:
Green Eggs and Ham
Cat in the Hat
Red Fish, Blue Fish
Little Golden Books (I had tons of these – anyone remember these with the gold edges and the train of characters on the back?)
The Pokey Puppy
Fairy Tales: Cinderella, Snow White, etc.
Terrible Awful No Good Very Bad Day
Clifford books
Ronald Dahl – specifically The Witches and PARTICULARLY the BFG
OLDER:
From The Mixed UP Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankwieler
Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and all books by C.S. Lewis
Beverly Cleary
Judy Bloom
Babysitter’s Club books
I’ll be back with more when I have some time to really think about this. Great thread!!!:D

When I was really little... like 3, I took this book out of the library every single week. I have no idea why... I think I liked the concept of consequence as well as the rythym: The Old Woman and The Pig (http://www.authorama.com/english-fairy-tales-6.html)
I also LOVED Where the Wild Things Are. I never really liked the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I think they read that to us at nursery school. I preferref Bearenstein Bears and Amelia Bedelia. I also read all the Lil'Miss books.
Eventually I moved onto The Mixed up Files... and I read all the books by that author. At the same time I read all the Roald Dahl books as well as the Shell Silverstein books. After that I moved onto Christopher Pike and Judy Bloom (Are You There God? It's Me Margaret was my first).

Richard Scarry's Busy Busy World. Sigh, this book is now out of print.
As I got older, my favorites included the Anne of Green Gables series, anything Nancy Drew, Judy Blume, or Beverly Cleary, and The Island of the Blue Dolphins, A Ring of Endless Light, and Jacob Have I Loved.

I don't know why, because I'm not and never have been into dinosaurs; but my favorite book growing up was Danny & The Dinosaur by Syd Hoff. I still have the book. He had a couple of really good books.
When I got older, I liked the Oz books by Frank Baum... The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Tic-Toc of Oz, etc... I've always loved the Encyclopedia Brown books, Harcy Boys & Nancy Drew books, and my favorite older "childhood book" of all time is Where the Red Fern Grows!!
My sister had "dibbs" on giving all the kids Dr. Seuss books for their birthdays and for Christmas, so all the kids in our family have a complete Dr. Seuss collection. (I even have "The Tough Coughs As It Ploughs The Dough", and "The Seven Godivas".)
edited to add: I also have the entire series "Colored" fairy tale books... the Big Blue Book of Fairy Tales, The Big Yellow Book of Fairy Tales, etc...
Man, I keep forgetting this stuff... I still have all my faves and I just saw the Black Stallion series out on my bookcase, too. When I got older, I bought them all - tried to get them all in hardback, but some were only available in paperback.
