Birthday present question for 1st grader

I have a niece in 1st grade that I have to buy a birthday present for. Any suggestions??

is she an arts and crafts type girl? there are tons of "make your own jewelry box/ picture frame/ paper weight/ bracelets etc" kits at toys r us or at crafts stores.

does she love school? you could get her "brain quest", which is a set of trivia cards at age apropriate levels. my first graders loved those.

books are also good, some easy chapter books (magic treehouse, junie b jones, etc.) may be good if she is a good reader already, otherwise ask her mom what type of books she likes.
